Longbranch Crossing Gopher Tortoise Recipient Site partners with developers to relocate gopher tortoises and provide a sanctuary in perpetuity. Revenues received from relocation are reinvested into our conservation efforts. Our objective is to provide the highest level of long-term preservation for gopher tortoises and their related ecology. We are located along the Trail Ridge Formation in North Florida which is a unique, sandhill habitat with elevations up to 150 feet. Gopher tortoises thrive on well drained, sandy soils, ideal for their constructed burrow tunnels. Our site has an abundance of food consisting of wiregrass, legumes, prickly pear cactus, blackberries, other low growing plants and seasonal fruits. Wildlife conservation is a major part of the vision of Longbranch Crossing. We strive to enhance the diversity of habitat within our boundaries in order to compliment native species such as whitetail deer, turkey and black bear. In addition to having rare sandhill habitat, Longbranch Crossing has dramatic seepage slope, ravine areas. These temperate hardwood forests contain unique diversity along our creek areas which comprise part of the Black Creek Basin. All the habitats within the boundaries of Longbranch Crossing serve as an important recharge area for Florida’s aquifer. Longbranch Crossing is a conservation preserve for wildlife. We are dedicated to being a good steward of the land, while creating an awareness of Florida’s natural environment, ecology and heritage. We engage in sustainable efforts that include Longleaf Pine restoration, wildlife conservation, and preservation of native plants and imperiled species. Longbranch Crossing is a permitted site for gopher tortoise relocation.
