L3 Link Training & Simulation has a rich history that dates back to its founding by Ed Link in the late 1920s as Link Aviation Devices, Inc. Known for revolutionizing simulator-based aviation training, the company has been at the forefront of enhancing performance and safety for both military and civilian aviation industries over eighty years.
One of the company's earliest breakthroughs was the ANT-18 Basic Instrument Trainer, affectionately known as the 'Blue Box,' which became standard equipment worldwide during World War II. L3 Link didn't stop there; in the 1950s, they secured major contracts to simulate various jet models like the F-89D and B-47B Stratojet, pioneering sophisticated synthetic visual systems.
The momentum continued into the 1960s with their collaboration on space training devices used by NASA astronauts for the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. On the civilian front, they created comprehensive flight simulators for iconic aircraft like the DC-8, B-727, and Concorde.
Their influence expanded further in the 1970s with innovations such as the Synthetic Flight Training System for the U.S. Army and collaborations on NASA's Shuttle Mission Simulator. Into the 1980s, they stayed ahead of the curve by introducing microprocessor-based visual systems.
Significant growth occurred through strategic mergers and acquisitions; notably, their acquisition by Hughes Aircraft in 1988 was followed by becoming part of L3 Communications after acquiring Raytheon’s flight simulation division in 2000. This reshaped the company as L3 Link Simulation & Training. Today, under L3Harris Technologies, they continue to lead with major contracts including F/A-22 training and numerous U.S. military simulations.
Today, the headquarters is based in Florida by Deland but was registered as a state model company in Delaware on November 13, 2001. Led by President Chuck Link, L3 Link upholds its status as an industry titan with operations branching across various American cities.
