La Fonda De Aurora La Fonda De Aurora is a small, inexpensive spot for Cuban breakfast and lunch. Our menu includes Cuban coffee, Cuban sandwiches and daily lunch specials such as masas de puerco, ropa vieja, ajiaco and more. For a more complete list of our menu items visit our menu page. We have daily breakfast specials consisting of two eggs prepared in any style with potatoes, Cuban toast and Café con Leche (Cuban coffee with milk). Our daily lunch specials consist of a main meat dish served with rice and beans, fried plantains and a small salad For example. A few of our lunch signature dishes are: On Wednesdays, Ropa Vieja, known as Old Clothes, it is a savory shredded beef dish prepared with all the island spices and is accompanied with rice and beans. On Thursday, we have my favorite, Bistec en Cazuela, Steak in a Pot, which is a mouthwatering steak served in a tasty Cuban sauce over white rice, mmmmmm yummy! And on Fridays, you certainly do not want to miss my Grandmother's Seafood Soup which consists of shrimp, crab, clams and mussels in an extraordinary broth with the surprise of a little Pernod and fennel among other secret ingredients. My inspirations to open my "fonda" are my Mother, Aurora, for whom I named the fonda and my Grandmother, Kate Wilcox, who was a sensational cook. Aside from the fact that I come from a Cuban family, I have always enjoyed cooking and preparing family meals. Primarily from growing up in and around the kitchen while my grandmother made the most amazing Cuban dishes. My Grandmother had a flair for presentation and coupled with the smells from the kitchen it was a true luxury to enjoy such fine home cooked meals on a daily basis. Today, I have taken that inspiration and have presented it in what is known as a "fonda". Fonda is the Spanish version of what the French call a Bistro which specializes in quick meals to go. Before the Castro Regime, fondas were very popular throughout Cuba. Fondas were usually small, quaint family owned restaurants which provided home cooked meals at fairly reasonable prices. Today, one of the very few surviving fondas in Cuba would be "La Bodeguita del Medio" located in the old colonial area of Havana. As for those who have had the pleasure of visiting La Bodeguita, the first thing you`ll notice is the fact that it is very small but with great tasting food and not to mention that it was one of Hemingway's favorite hangouts.
