Ken Russell is a City Commissioner Elected to represent one of Miami’s most diverse districts, Commissioner Russell has used his time in office, and a strong conviction that Miami can do better, to push forward a citizen-led agenda based on transparency and good government. Ken has become a leader at tackling sea level rise from his municipal perch, an advocate for a living wage that lifts families out of poverty, and a champion for affordable housing that allows them to enjoy their city. He is a tireless fighter for social justice in Miami’s marginalized communities. Ken believes citizen engagement in local politics is absolutely vital to the future of our city and country, and has helped bring people together throughout South Florida on major issues of local concern including historic preservation, environmental protection, forward-thinking traffic initiatives, smart development and ethical reform. With the policies at the top of the federal government now increasingly uncertain, the commissioner believes that it is more important than ever for citizens to engage, persist and resist. Commissioner Russell speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese, and has conducted business in over 40 countries. He is a former professional yo-yo player and kite surfing instructor. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a focus on International Marketing and a minor in Japanese. He resides in Coconut Grove, Florida, with his wife Juliana and their two children, Julia and Eva. When Ken is not enjoying time with them or working to make Miami better, he can usually be found making furniture and wood sculptures.
