In 2001, I retired from GeoSyntec Consultants, the company I had founded in 1983. My title of Chairman Emeritus for life of GeoSyntec is purely honorific. I am entirely free to work as a consultant for any type of client. This is why I created JP GIROUD, INC. in 2001. Since then, I worked on more than 200 assignments. Dr. Giroud, a former professor of geotechnical engineering, is a consulting engineer under JP GIROUD, INC., and Chairman Emeritus and founder of GeoSyntec Consultants. Dr. Giroud is chairman of the editorial board of Dr. Giroud is an independent consultant operating under “JP GIROUD, INC.” since January 2001. Co-founder, former Chairman of the Board, and Chairman Emeritus of GeoSyntec Consultants, a consulting engineering firm that grew in seventeen years (1983-2001) from two to more than three hundred employees, including more than 30 PhDs. Dr. Giroud, a pioneer of geosynthetics since 1970, is recognized worldwide as a geosynthetics leading expert. In 1977, he coined the words “geotextile” and “geomembrane”, thus starting the “geo-terminology”. In 1982-83, he was instrumental in the formation of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), of which he was President until 1990. A former professor of geotechnical engineering, Dr. Giroud has been Director (1978-1983) of the Geotextiles and Geomembranes Group of Woodward-Clyde Consultants, a major consulting firm, now URS. In 1983, he co-founded GeoServices, which became Geosyntec Consultants, of which he was Chairman of the Board.
