President and majority owner, Barbara Smith, has a background in construction that began over 29 years ago. She has a BS in Industrial Technology with a Construction Specialty from Eastern Michigan University. Barbara went on to work as a project manager and estimator for both Cargile Contractors and D.A.G. construction before furthering her career and experience as a Senior Estimator with both Jacobs Engineering and Hixson Architects and Engineers preparing multi-million budgets for a varied array of fortune 500 firms. Tom brings over 34 years of experience to Journey Steel. He began his career by learning designing/drafting, purchasing, and project management. He quickly gained respect in the industry emerging as a leader with strong estimating and management skills, learned while working for prominent steel fabricators and erectors in the region. His understanding of project flow and organization are the backbone of Tom’s strong leadership abilities. Safety is now and has always been a primary concern at Journey Steel! Our employees, by the nature of their jobs, often work in difficult or dangerous environments. We not only require traditional safety gear, we work to find ways to control or ameliorate any environmental hazards.  For example, we provide shade tents and large quantities of water at job sites that do not have shade. We provide lighting in areas where visibility is an issue. Our EMR results show the success of our emphasis on safety. Journey Steel has been, and intends to remain, very safety minded. From their initial interview process, to hiring, to training, to actually working on a project our employees know that we are serious about safety. The basic issues of  protective jackets, pants, work gloves, Kevlar sleeves, steel-toed boots, eye protection, earplugs and hard hats are just that, basic.  These go with every job. For several of our jobs, we have had to ask our employees to work long hours, to work in very hot weather, to work in very uncomfortable conditions, and to work high in the air.   For each of those jobs we provide additional safety needs—everything from shading, multiple water coolers, and extra safety lines, to whatever is needed. We are happy to say that we have had zero lost time accidents in our short history and we are striving to keep that going in the future. We have experience designing and structuring steel into shapes. Express your company’s inner beauty, and we will make that beauty show outwardly. We have done diverse projects featuring curves, wing shapes, arcs, and almost any other shape you can name. We can fabricate the shapes you want. Duke Energy had an emergency requiring repairs to the box trusses at their sub-stations.  We responded to this emergency by working 10 hours a day for 55 straight days in 100-degree heat.  Duke’s emergency need was met with no power outages. When the unpredictable happens, or a combination of issues occurs, just call us. We will help you resolve the issues.
