Joshua Henry currently stars as Billy Bigelow in Scott Rudin’s Broadway revival of Carousel. Most recently he played Aaron Burr in the national touring production of Hamilton. Having begun the role in Chicago last September before moving to San Francisco and ending in Los Angeles. On his turn as Burr Entertainment Weekly wrote “Undoubtedly, this production, stellar as it is, belongs to its would-be villain Aaron Burr. . . no one will play this role better.” After graduation from the University of Miami he made his professional acting debut as Judas in a regional production in Godspell, going on to join the ensemble of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first original musical, In the Heights, off-Broadway, later joining it on Broadway. He continued to win plum roles in the off-Broadway production of Serenade, as the Tin Man in New York City Center’s production of The Wiz, and originating the role of Favorite Son in Green Day’s American Idiot on Broadway. Henry earned his first Tony nomination (Best Actor in a Musical) in 2011 for his role as Haywood Patterson in The Scottsboro Boys. The New York Times praised his “performance of keen intensity” while the Los Angeles Times wrote that his “powerhouse performance... gives this dazzling, envelope-pushing show a beautiful gravity.” He appeared in American Repertory Theater’s production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, opening in Cambridge, Massachusetts before moving to Broadway. In 2014 he portrayed aspirational soldier Flick in the Roundabout Theatre production of Violet, earning his second Best Actor Tony nomination. For Joshua Henry, 2016 would be a watershed year. It began with his casting as Noble Sissle in Music Box Theatre’s Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed before being cast as Aaron Burr in the Chicago run of Hamilton.
