We are a new chamber ensemble of vocal soloists who embrace a repertoire of song spanning more than five centuries. The individual singers in the group embody a broad range of musical experience; we have sung opera and early music, art song and oratorio, as soloists and as members of large choruses and small ensembles. As chamber musicians, we bring this broad base of expressive possibility to our programs of solo and ensemble music of varying styles. Silver Swan has a special love for music of the nineteenth century, but we are equally happy to bring forth the sung art of the Renaissance. German Lieder, French Melodies, part songs; all will find themselves side by side with chansons, Italian madrigals and canzoni. This Swan will also journey into the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, making stops in the 17th and 18th as well. As we explore the vast and varying possibilities of concert song, we will help you along the way. Judith Melander, mezzo, is the Director of Music at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ on Summit Avenue, where she can be found conducting the choir, playing the hammered dulcimer, and beating the djembe in addition to performing her vocal solos. Judith has appeared on stage with the Minnesota Opera, North Star Opera, Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera Company, and the Twin Cities Lyric Theater. She has also performed as a soloist on concerts with the Mississippi Valley Orchestra, the Oratorio Society of Minnesota, and the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra. An honors graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance, Judith maintains a private voice and piano studio from her home on Medicine Lake, where she lives with her husband and two children. John Bitterman John Bitterman, Baritone Baritone John Bitterman, founder and artistic director of Silver Swan, has enjoyed a varied career as a soloist, chorister, instrumentalist and composer. He sang for seven seasons in the Rose Ensemble, and travelled with them to Spain, France, Germany and Italy. He has sung opera and oratorio around the country, and was a soloist with the Oregon Bach Festival.
