We provide psychological consultation to help athletes on and off the field of play. Our tools and training help athletes overcome psychological obstacles so that they can perform to their full potential. We complement the training for athletes with objective psychological assessment of the athletes delivered to coaches. This information can help coaches make informed decisions and help put athletes in the situations where they are able to succeed and continue improving.
Our strategy focuses on building a complete psychological profile using a comprehensive battery of techniques. Surveys and questionnaires allow athletes to tell us how they see themselves. Cognitive interviews and behavioral measures help us understand how teammates, staff members, and our clinicians match the athletes’ own reports. Finally, our specialized cardiovascular measurements reveal psychological information that cannot be reported by the athletes or observed by others. These measures help us build a comprehensive psychological profile of athletes that is continuously updated.
Everyone experiences psychological stress. These stressors can have a negative impact on decision making, task performance, and cardiovascular health both immediately and long after. Athletes face special challenges because they face these same stressors with thousands of people watching and evaluating every move. Meditation, relaxation strategies, and biofeedback training are all useful techniques that athletes can use to deal with stress. With our psychological assessment and monitoring, we can identify and track which of these strategies make the greatest impact for the individual athlete.
Dr. Alvin Jin received his Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. He studied how psychological, behavioral, and motivational factors influence cardiovascular activity and task performance. Dr. Jin worked with a non-profit performing psychological and cardiovascular evaluation of individuals with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) both before and after clinical interventions. These measures helped identify and track the severity of the initial symptoms and monitored how clinical interventions could improve the quality of life for these individuals.
