James Martin founded the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford in 2005 to foster and facilitate innovative, interdisciplinary research on the problems, dangers and opportunities of the near future. Martin is the largest individual benefactor to the University of Oxford in its 900-year history. He is an Honorary Life Fellow of the British Royal Institution, a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science, an Honorary Fellow of Keble College, Oxford, and a Senior Fellow of the James Martin Center for Non-Proliferation Studies at Monterey, California. He has commonly been referred to in the IT press as the "Father of CASE" (Computer-Aided Systems Engineering) - tools that help automate software development. The original prototypes for the Texas Instruments and KnowledgeWare CASE tools were built in Martin's home under his direction. In the late 1980s these became the two leading CASE tools. Martin founded James Martin and Company, now called " From 1975 to 2001 Martin gave 5-day seminars on IT. Martin was of the very few people who both a leading business "guru" and a leading technology "guru." He was constantly in demand to lecture to big audiences around the world, and meet leadership people. For three decades he was able to observe firsthand the rapidly worsening problems of the planet, and discuss practical actions that can be taken to alleviate them. Mission and Structure The Oxford Martin School's mission is to foster innovative thinking, interdisciplinary scholarship and collaborative activity to address the most pressing risks and realize new opportunities of the 21st century. The School is designed to be dynamic and flexible, taking up new lines of research and addressing critical questions as challenges and opportunities emerge. The School offers research funding and support for forward-looking Oxford University research projects that are organised into the School’s Institutes and Programmes.  The School’s central directorate provides strategic direction, administrative infrastructure and outreach support for its wide-ranging research activity. The central Oxford premises offer a research space for academics and a venue for seminars, meetings and events organised or supported by the School. Research projects funded by the Oxford Martin School are selected through a rigorous, competitive process in which the four criteria of Scale, Excellence, Impact and Value Added must be met.  This means that all work is required to: address issues of global significance for the 21st century; be of the highest academic standards; have the potential to effect positive change; be innovative and interdisciplinary.  Institutes, Programmes and individuals (known as James Martin Fellows) that receive funding are members of the Oxford Martin School.  Together they constitute a unique, interdisciplinary community of scholars who collectively are tackling the challenges of the 21st century. Members contribute to and benefit from the School’s regular meetings, seminars, publications and partnerships, as well as various opportunities to disseminate research beyond the academic community. James Martin was an inspiration to millions - an extraordinary intellect, with wide-ranging interests, boundless energy and an unwavering commitment to addressing the greatest challenges facing humanity. For 25 years Martin was the highest-selling author of books on computing and related technology. James Martin was a passionate advocate of the power of ideas, and provided the largest benefaction to the University of Oxford in its 900-year history in order to create the Oxford Martin School.
