Island Dolphin Care, Inc. (IDC) is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Key Largo, Florida. Founded in 1997 by Ms. Deena Hoagland, LCSW, IDC offers innovative dolphin-assisted therapy programs for children and adults with special needs, including veterans and individuals with developmental or physical disabilities, emotional challenges, and serious illnesses. These therapeutic sessions incorporate proven techniques combined with experiential learning involving Atlantic bottlenose dolphins to enhance sensory integration, motor skills, language development, communication abilities, self-esteem, and organizational capabilities. The facility features fully accessible indoor and outdoor environments, including aquariums and exhibit areas designed for educational marine science exploration. IDC is equipped with elevators and offers flotation devices, wet suits, and the assistance of trained therapists to ensure a welcoming experience for all participants and their families. Educational programs foster respect for marine mammals while promoting self-growth through playful interaction. Overseeing these initiatives are board members such as Luke Bullen, James S Lupino, and Richard Wolfe, who contribute significant volunteer efforts alongside professional staff like Mallorie and Eli, dedicated instructors in various therapeutic programs. IDC places a strong emphasis on community and volunteer engagement, evidenced by the contributions of individuals including Eva, Kathie, Cindy, and George. The organization collaborates with academic institutions and extends gratitude to its partners and sponsors for their support.
