This is how the process works, with a little more detail to hopefully answer common questions. First of all, you have been strengthening your cortex right? Second, have you determined a temporary holding area for unwanted items? 3rd, you at least understand the concept of 5S and the steps we are going to take? Good, let's pick our first area to organize, a closet.   We are starting with a closet for a couple of reasons.  Most people, even those who are considered organized, have a closet that needs help.  I like starting with a closet because relatively speaking it is small, compared to an entire room, yet contain all of the issues a whole room can.  At this stage, it is best to keep it small - remember we are trying not to wake up nebula.  Also remember, when you are sorting, we have a holding area ready for those items that we determine do not belong in this closet. Wait! You are not done yet… remember the TEMPORARY holding area? Yeah, we still need to deal with that. No worries, you had the totes clearly labeled and made decisions while sorting so this isn't so bad. If you cannot get rid of everything in the holding area right away at least make sure to revisit it frequently. Be diligent about it being a temporary holding area, otherwise you have not solved the problem, you just moved it. Enlist the help your spouse or kids to help with this. Get them involved, share what you have learned and accomplished and you will be surprised how much they learn through you, and that benefits them as well as you.
