There are several species of bigheaded ants that live throughout the United States and depending on the species they can range in color from yellow to dark reddish brown. Their appearance depends mostly on what type of worker they are: a major worker or a minor worker. Minor workers are the smaller of the two, they are responsible for feeding the colony, taking care of immature ants, and helping to build the nest. Adult minor workers grow to be approximately 2mm in length. Major ants are about twice the size of minor ants and grow to be around 3-4mm long and their bodies are covered in sparse long hairs. A drywood termite swarm occurs when winged reproductive members fly from the colony in order to find a mate and create a new colony of their own. A swarm generally occurs after a heavy rain on a warm day. If drywood termites have infested your home you may also notice piles of frass (feces). The termites will remove the frass from their tunnels and leave piles of it on the floor throughout your home.
