Martin County recently selected the HJA Design Studio to redesign the 36- hole Martin County Public Golf Course. HJA teamed with Sanford Golf Design, Stephen Boruff Architects, Bowman Consulting and the National Golf Foundation and was selected over six other teams. The original 9-hole course was built in 1925 by Hugh Willoughby famed explorer. The County's and our team's objective is to create a long range master plan that will produce a sustainable golf facility that provides a quality yet affordable golf experience for visitors and residents alike. Building community consensus on the future of the facility included a public outreach program including visioning workshops to evaluate three alternative scenarios. Martin County's Parks and Recreation Director, Kevin Abatte also focused on creating an economic model that would allow the course to be upgraded and maintained or improved for years to come. Two community-wide workshop meetings have been held as well as numerous meetings with the Golf Course Advisory Committee which was established by the board of County Commissioners. Okeechobee County Commissioners recently approved the 850 acre Sundance Trails Eco-Resort which is the first newly planned Resort Activity Center (RESAC) approved in County history. The ranch, which was formerly developed as a rural ranchette large lot community is being redeveloped into a clustered mixed use community centered around outdoor music and theatrical events and allowing a wide range of activities. The abundant native pine flatwoods will be preserved as a backdrop for camping, hiking, swimming, biking and general relaxation.
