Historic Lakeland, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization established in 1979 with the primary mission of promoting appreciation for Lakeland’s unique architectural heritage and advocating for the preservation of its historic structures. Guided by a dedication to using the city's past to inform its future, Historic Lakeland has played an integral role as the community's conscience regarding matters of preservation since its inception.
One of the organization’s early significant undertakings was addressing the neglected condition of the Frances Langford Promenade on Lake Mirror. Over the years, Historic Lakeland has successfully undertaken numerous preservation efforts and has actively worked to save significant structures such as the old Lakeland High School Building (now Lawton Chiles Middle Academy), the Lakeland Terrace Hotel, and the Coca-Cola Building (today part of the Lakeland Fire Department). The organization also celebrates restored sites managed by others, including Munn Park, the Antiques District, Polk Theatre, and the John Cox Grammar School, now serving as the home for Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine.
Annual recognition is given during National Preservation Week in May to owners of commercial and residential properties who have thoughtfully renovated their buildings in line with historic character preservation. Their Annual Meeting is traditionally held on November 9th at the Florida Southern College Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, restored by notable figures including a partner from Mesick Cohen Wilson Baker based out of Albany, New York.
Historic Lakeland, Inc. has observed downtown Lakeland and its surrounding districts experiencing a cultural renaissance, with artists, craftsmen, and young people finding refuge in the area’s historic charm. The influx of lifestyle businesses, restaurants, and coffee shops thriving within these historical settings testifies to the area's ongoing revitalization.
Historic Lakeland, Inc. was officially incorporated on July 9, 1979, and remains actively engaged with operations based at P.O. Box 3347, Lakeland, FL, 33802. The organization is led by key figures including President Gregory Fancelli, Secretary Tisha Shelden, and Treasurer James Edwards.
