hayes timber Hayes Timber Inc. has resided in Grey and Bruce counties for four generations. Milton and Sarah Hayes of Lion’s Head ran their cedar post and log business, called Milton Hayes and Sons, near Lion’s Head and eventually sold the business to their son Roger. The business was renamed Hayes Timber when Roger and his wife Sandy moved it to its new home just south of Wiarton where it remains today. Through 30 years of business, Roger has grown Hayes Timber to include cedar and hardwood mulch; delivering products to Northern and South Western Ontario, as well as into the United States. Today, Roger works alongside his son-in-law Dan, who is working to one day take Hayes Timber into a new generation. Dan hopes to bring a modern approach to the cedar business while keeping the family-owned values that have been a part of Hayes Timber for many generations. Roger Hayes was born in Lion’s Head to Milton and Sarah Hayes, and grew up on the Bruce Peninsula with his six siblings. He worked as a teen for his father’s business, Milton Hayes and Sons, and tried his hand at management working for the local hardware store. Before taking over the family business, Roger spent 11 years with the Ministry of Natural Resources as a Forest Fire Technician. Being raised on the Bruce Peninsula, working with his dad, and spending many years in the bush as a fire technician gave Roger a deep appreciation for the forest and its products. Never one to shy away from hard work, Roger also runs a cattle farm alongside his other work endeavours. Dan O’Donoghue was born and raised in Huntsville on a hobby farm where he helped his family raise sheep, horses, and chickens. His father worked for most of his life with the Ministry of Natural Resources so the family spent most of their time outside enjoying their beautiful surroundings in Muskoka. Always a ball of energy, Dan has dipped his hands into many endeavours over the years, including professional snowboarding, owning and operating a wakeboard school, graphic design, and car sales. After spending nine years in Toronto, Dan and his wife Cortney left their city life to move back to the farm and work with the family business. After many years of self discovery and adventures, Dan finally feels back at home on the farm, working with his hands in the great outdoors. All our cedar is locally sourced in Ontario and all by-products are used in our mulch product, which in turn is sold wholesale to nurseries, landscapers and landscape depots.
