HANLEY CENTER FOUNDATION, INC., West Palm Beach

We are committed to solving today’s addiction problems for tomorrow’s youth. We are the largest provider of prevention services in Florida. In the early 1980s, Jack and Mary Jane Hanley retired to Palm Beach County and discovered the absence of any facilities dedicated to quality substance abuse treatment. Through the couple’s visionary leadership, the Hanley Center and Hanley Center Foundation were established. Known simply now as Hanley Foundation, our 501(c)(3) organization provides programming and grant support for statewide substance use disorder advocacy, prevention, education, and access to quality treatment. The Hanley Foundation has changed the conversation within families, schools, and the community at large in regards to substance use disorders, their prevention, and their treatment. We are committed to keeping youth from experimenting with drugs and alcohol while providing access to quality treatment to individuals who are in need. Our targeted and time-tested approach incorporates four primary mission areas: Last year, we provided nearly $1,000,000 in prevention and education services in Florida, impacting the lives of nearly 30,000 students, parents, and caregivers. We are teaming up with medical and other professionals on the front lines of this epidemic, to spot the signs of substance abuse and save lives. We are working with leaders to shatter the stigma of addiction on the local, state, and national level. Hanley Foundation is a recognized thought leader in this evolving dialogue on both the local and the national level. Our vision to provide increased educational opportunities to professionals and paraprofessionals, who are on the front lines of this crisis in our local communities, is a model for outreach programs countrywide. Prior to assuming her role as Executive Director, Jan Cairnes led Hanley Foundation’s Prevention Services for 18 years, raising grant funds to deliver programming free of charge to schools, churches, and community groups. Jan’s enthusiasm and commitment to her most recent leadership role accompany the Foundation’s newly enhanced mission: to provide expanded statewide programming and grant support for substance use disorder prevention, education and advocacy, along with access to quality treatment. A native of Pineville, Kentucky, Jan received her Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Kentucky University. Jan joined the Hanley family in 1998 to bring a model approach to prevention education. She has co-authored two prevention programs including “Bounce: Be a Resilient Child,” for children six to 12 years and “Aging to Perfection,” an educational program for older adults. She has been published in magazines and has spoken at numerous local, state, and national conferences. Jan was instrumental in Florida winning the prestigious Sports Illustrated Award in 2006,more than quadrupling the impact of the program through her fundraising efforts. Jan was a finalist for Sun Sentinel’s Sports Person of the year in 2007. In 2008, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission named her Outstanding Sports Contributor and Cardinal Newman High School named her a Distinguished Basketball Crusader. In 2015, she was inducted into the Pineville High School Sports Hall of Fame. Turner Benoit, a Palm Beach native and former Regional Business Development and Marketing Associate for MAP Health Management, oversees the Foundation’s advocacy and fundraising efforts to help bolster our expansion of services. He joined the Hanley family as a clinical liaison in 2013. Turner’s efforts to introduce the Foundation’s newly expanded mission to both old and new supporters in the community at large will help to reach even more people in the coming years. With a philosophy to lead by interdependence and team effort, Donna believes that substance abuse prevention is a key tool in helping youth avoid the cycle of chemical dependency. She is an active community member, having chaired the Impact100 Finance Committee Focus Group while serving as a board member for three years. In addition, she was featured on CBS Early Morning for a colon cancer quilting project, “Grace and Good Works,” as well as on a local news program highlighting disabled aquatic programs as part of their “Unsung Heroes.” Donna’s professional affiliations include membership in the Government Financial Officers of Florida. Donna received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of New Orleans and her Masters of Science Accountancy from the University of Phoenix. She holds certifications in National Contracts Management and Cooperative Agreements, Certified Federal Grant Writer- Recipients and Pass-Thru Organizations, Certified Federal Grant Writer- Federal Personnel, GFOA-Future of Public Budgeting, National Guidelines for Best Practices, and Electronic Records Management per Florida requirements. Ryan Wertepny is a prevention professional who plays a key role in educating families about the disease of addiction, while helping youth make healthy choices and become more media-literate. He oversees all of Hanley Foundation’s prevention programming and enjoys knowing that he and his team make a difference. Additionally, Ryan has assisted in grant writing efforts resulting in more than $1 million of support for evidence-based prevention programs throughout Florida. Active with the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse and the Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition, he volunteers with the Coalition’s Event Planning Subcommittee and received their Community (Civic) Leader Champion Award in 2014. Ryan describes himself as an avid sports fan and loves traveling with his family. Hanley Foundation’s mission is to provide substance abuse prevention and education programs for parents, caregivers and school-age children. In addition, the foundation provides financial aid scholarships for patients who could not otherwise afford addiction treatment.
