came to life through a need to provide both an external shelter and extra living space on our boat. Living on board can be a dull experience if you are unable to utilise the deck area. Investigating the various options we discovered that the current ranges of canopies and enclosures are limited in their application by price, size, weight and unsuitable for easy storage and handling. The traditional canopies and shelters comprise mainly of permanent bespoke fixtures and have a high cost. These products haven’t changed in years. We have worked in product and interior design for many years and felt up to the challenge of developing an alternative to suit the needs of today’s outdoor leisure market. Following draft designs we made an initial prototype using – shower curtains and odds and ends found at the local caravan outlet! It was a huge success. It enabled us to sit out of the intense heat, the drizzling rain (even sudden downpours) and the sneaky winds. From the research we had carried out we realised that this was quite a unique product and worthy of some further development and investment in better materials! This collaboration has ensured that the Habitent range of products meets all the high standards that are now demanded by boat owners The success of the original Habitent combined with the enthusiasm of our customers has resulted in the product range being extended to 3 distinct models, covering a wider range of boats. “HI, I attach 3 pictures taken last week-end at Portavadie on Loch Fyne on a windy and wet day. It was the first time we had put it up with really no issues, we have altered the stern strap so as not to cause an obstruction across the back and that has worked well. We stayed out in the cockpit until almost dark that night, protected from the breeze nicely. It was great to note so many additional design features you’ve added that make it a very good product. We had an LED light hung up inside and it felt very warm and cosy, and it also gave us much more privacy over the weekend. Perfect “Habitent on a Gibsea 282 in France since 2012, through sun, wind and rain. Garry says ‘my wife has said several times that the Habitent was the best thing we had bought for our trip and now I am forced to agree’. We crossed the channel in early May and up went the Habitent while we went into the canal system. We covered approx. 1600 km and the habitent was not removed until we laid up the boat in September. This year we put up the habitent again on arrival on May 25th and it will stay up again until we leave mid Sept. We are currently tied to a Jetty at Chatillon -Coligny experiencing one of the most severe storms we have ever been in. Torrential rain with 40+ knots. We were not expecting it and the habitat was not secured properly to the boat. Even so, we stayed dry and comfy.
