HAITI PARTNERS, INC., Delray Beach

About Haiti Partners Haiti Partners was founded in 2009 by John Engle and Kent Annan to help Haitians change Haiti through education. Many people have shaped who we are through their generosity and work. Our experience and programs go back to when John first moved to Haiti in 1991. Several of our core Haitian and American staff have been collaborating for more than a dozen years to develop the core programs and approach of our work. We draw on our experience as we keep pushing ahead toward our vision. that Haiti Partners was supporting and beyond. As such, Haiti Partners’ Children’s Academy opened in 2012. The (known as “ADECA” in Haiti) is a vibrant primary school that serves as our model school. It’s a place where educators from across Haiti come to see a quality school in action and discover methods of education and leadership that help them transform their communities. While helping our partner schools financially and with teacher and administrative training was important, it was not enough. Teachers at these partner schools needed to see, to experience, to witness an approach in working with parents, staff and students that was completely different from the top-down norm in Haiti. Today, with the Children’s Academy, that model is possible. Making a Difference Haiti Partners consists of Haiti-based and US-based organizations with boards of directors and core staff teams in both countries. More than 200 additional people are employed or receive stipends through our schools and programs in Haiti, including teachers, administrators, cooks and school directors. Today we have over 1,200 students enrolled in seven schools. Mission Haiti Partners’ mission is to ‘Help Haitians Change Haiti through Education’. Our belief is that Haiti’s brutal history of colonization, slavery, and exploitation has traumatized its people and created a culture of authoritarian leadership that all to often results in the abuse of power and a scarcity mindset. The abuse of power stifles the positive evolution of institutions – families, organizations, businesses, government. Leaders that abuse power create and perpetuate conditions that inhibit people from growing, innovating and discovering their potential. Given its history and the typical approach of aid, it’s no wonder that Haiti seems stuck. In order for Haiti to address its many challenges, its children need to experience an innovative, quality education – an education that empowers them to develop their potential, to think outside the box and to engage in improving their communities. This is Haiti Partners’ mission and this is the work that we engage in each day. We envision a Haiti in which the traditional, authoritarian system of education has been replaced with a liberating, community-based model that – through collaborative leadership, innovative educational methods, and collective change-making – provides students, parents and everyone involved the skills and knowledge they need to develop their communities and work together toward a brighter, more loving and sustainable future. We seek to bring this vision to reality first through developing the Children’s Academy and Learning Center as an exemplary model of community-based, quality education for the nation. Next, we draw on this model in order to strengthen our partner schools so that they, too, can provide an education that helps their students and communities develop. Finally, we host visiting teachers, school administrators, and education officials – from within and outside of Haiti – as well as provide training to other education networks in Haiti, so that this liberating model of community-based, quality education can spread far and wide and have the greatest impact possible. Partnership makes us more effective, productive, and joyful. Partnership is central to what we do. We love to partner with people and organizations so that we can all serve our missions better.
