Company Profile
The house of Mark Twain, the Brontë sisters, Thackeray, Dickens, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Maurice Sendak, Shel Silverstein, and Margaret Wise Brown, HarperCollins has a long and rich history that reaches back to the early nineteenth century and offers our publishing team a depth of experience that few others can rival—from the modest print shop that James and John Harper opened in 1817 to the global house we are today.
Today, the company consists of the HarperCollins General Books Group, HarperCollins Children's Books, HarperCollins Christian Publishing, HarperCollins UK, HarperCollins Canada, HarperCollins Australia/New Zealand, HarperCollins India, HarperCollins Germany, HarperCollins Español, HarperCollins Ibérica, HarperCollins Japan, HarperCollins Holland, HarperCollins Nordic, HarperCollins Polska, HarperCollins France, HarperCollins Italy, HarperCollins Brasil, HarperCollins Mexico and Harlequin. HarperCollins is a subsidiary of News Corp.
At HarperCollins, authors and their work are at the center of everything we do. We are proud to provide our authors with unprecedented editorial excellence, marketing reach, long-standing connections with booksellers, and industry-leading insight into reader and consumer behavior. Consistently at the forefront of innovation and technological advancement, HarperCollins also uses digital technology to create unique reading experiences and expand the reach of our authors.
HarperCollins is one of the largest purchasers of paper in the publishing industry. We take our environmental impact very seriously and have adapted our business practices in an effort to help minimize our environmental footprint.
The HarperCollins global paper procurement and usage policy supports the use of environmentally sustainable fiber, strives to reduce pollution and aims to conserve natural resources through recycling and waste reduction. In order to produce our products responsibly, we have adopted high standards for the procurement of paper. We actively work with our suppliers to maximize the efficient use of paper and reduce consumption.
HarperCollins book printing paper is sourced from mills whose forest management practices are certified by independent, internationally recognized sustainable forestry certification bodies such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Suppliers who source wood from third party suppliers must provide proof that wood supplied by their third-party sources has been harvested in an environmentally sound manner.
In addition, we are committed to purchasing chain of custody certified paper where possible. Certifications accepted by HarperCollins are FSC, PEFC, SFI and CSA.
HarperCollins requires compliance with all government regulations in each community and country where our paper suppliers operate. We do not do business with companies who collude with or purchase wood products from illegal logging operations. We aim to use only acceptable fiber sources and work with suppliers to eliminate the use of non-certified Indonesian fiber from books produced for HarperCollins. We strive to exclude any contentious supplier and their affiliates from our supply chain.
(COC) certification for its paper. The company has increased the amount of COC-certified paper each year, helping to verify that it is identified or kept segregated from non-certified or non-controlled material. This process allows us to label our products, which in turn enables purchasers of our books to identify and choose products that support responsible forest management.
HarperCollins is committed to reducing its overall use of fiber where possible. We seek to reduce basis weights on titles where appropriate in order to reduce the use of fiber and raw materials consumed in the production of that paper. In addition, we have an extensive supply chain management process that allows us to better oversee print runs, and we are increasing the use of Print on Demand (POD) technologies to make for less waste in printing and shipping.
Through our HarperGreen campaign, reducing carbon emissions has become paramount to how we conduct business. We want our business practices and employee actions to make a difference while at the same time encouraging consumers to participate as well. Through initiatives such as a corporate purchasing program and installing energy efficient equipment, the whole company is embracing measures to reduce carbon emissions.
HarperCollinsUK was the first major publisher in the U.K. to take its operations carbon neutral – and has seen the percentage of its books made from FSC™ chain of custody certified paper rise from 70% in 2013 to 82% in 2014, with a target of at least 90% for 2015. All stationery paper used across the company in-house – for photocopiers, printers, letterhead and comp slips – is Chain of Custody certified (PEFC). The UK’s Distribution Centre in Glasgow, Scotland is a Zero Waste to Landfill site since March 2015. All general waste is incinerated and converted into energy.
HarperCollins Australia's distribution center, based outside of Sydney, won the 2008 Southern Highlands Business Awards for Excellence in Environmental Sustainability. The center was applauded not only for the range of its initiatives, but also for investing in energy-efficient equipment and encouraging suppliers and customers to follow its lead.
HarperCollins Publishers recognizes the importance of addressing its impact on climate change and is committed to taking significant steps to identify effective ways to decrease its energy use. We're continually working to reduce our environmental impact.
Brian Murray is President and Chief Executive Officer of HarperCollins Publishers. Since being appointed CEO in 2008, Murray has led the transformation of HarperCollins from a traditional print publishing company focused only on English language publishing, to a dynamic print and digital publisher with broad expertise in foreign language publishing and more than $350M in digital revenues. Murray has led six acquisitions including Thomas Nelson and Harlequin. The acquisition of Harlequin in 2014 extended the company’s global platform and digital presence, resulting in the ability to publish in more than 30 languages and publishing operations in a dozen new countries. The Thomas Nelson acquisition in 2012 allowed for the formation of the HarperCollins Christian Publishing division, positioning HarperCollins as the leading publisher of Christian content in the world.
