GUY SMITH,LLC, JACKSONVILLE

Guy Smith enjoyed the most prestigious victory of his career in 2003, taking the chequered flag of the Le Mans 24 Hour race in car No.7, the Bentley Speed 8 of Team Bentley. Guy had been a central figure for Team Bentley's attack on both the Sebring 12hrs and the Le Mans 24hrs, partnered with then six-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen and 'Dindo' Capello. After finishing 4th at Sebring in the 12hrs, the trio swept all before them at Le Mans that June, capturing pole-position and 1st place in the world-famous 24 Hour race. Guy was selected to pilot the car across the finish line at the end of the historic 71st running of the event to mark an emotional sixth win for Bentley. Team Bentley recognised Guy Smith’s talent and speed, offering him a race seat for 2001 alongside team-mates Martin Brundle and Stephane Ortelli, as the British luxury car manufacturer embarked on a three-year programme to win at Le Mans again. In the year of Bentley’s return to Le Mans, the car performed well and ran 3rd before a technical issue brought its race to an end. Alongside this programme, Guy contested the 2001 European Le Mans Series with Stefan Johansson in a Gulf-sponsored Audi R8, notching up three top-four finishes. Smith remained at Dyson Racing in 2013 making his 9th season with the American team. Guy also became a brand ambassador for Bentley Motors, and carried outall the test and development work on Bentley’s new Continental GT3 race car before racing it to 4th place in the Abu Dhabi 12hrs in December. Guy remained with Dyson racing making it his 9th season with the team. Tom, Dindo (Guy's team mates), Jo Hausner (engineer) and myself jogged the circuit and chatted on the Tuesday evening before the race. There was a great sense of calm in the pit all week long, which helped everyone and it's not easy to create this ambience and relaxed environment. It put us all at our ease and made the race feel like a 24 hour test session. It's very difficult to map out a future in motorsport. In an ideal world, I'd like to negotiate a test driver role with one of the F1 teams and then move into a race seat, but as we all know there's only 20 race seats and many more talented race drivers than that, all vying for these few places on the grid at the pinnacle of our sport. But that doesn't mean to say that I'm not reaching to the top. I just know that you must always keep your options open. I'm happy to be driving professionally in good cars and as long as I can keep doing that each year and progressing up the ladder, I'll get where I want to go. Again, we continue the 4 weekly tests, to make sure we are still on schedule. This is all done by doing loads of sprint work and ply metrics. He still continues high reps very low weight exercises. So every set of ex's lasts as long as it would at the respective race circuit. The amount of sets is determined by how many laps of that track will be completed. So in theory the session will replicate the race as closely as possible. In time, muscles used mental and physical fatigue. The main thing guy has to do is control his food intake. Lots of protein in his diet, to keep him lean. Minimum of 5 litres of water per day to flush his system through. Plus the water helps to break down body fats. He isn't allowed chocolates or sweets. Guy has really worked hard on all aspects of the training. Sometimes I'm sure he wondered why he was doing some of these bizarre ex's at 7.00 in the morning. He never argued, he looked at me a bit funny, but he got on with it. Especially now he can see the benefits in training and in the car, I'm sure he would agree it was all worth it.
