He initially worked in the family business developing and building both residential and commercial properties. His earnest desire to take a different direction and build his own company led him to start his own construction firm in 1986. From humble beginnings a dream was realized. It began with his first home in 1986 along with additions and remodels and quickly grew into a full service custom building company to meet the needs of its custom residential construction and remodeling clients. The decision was made in 1989 to follow his passion for custom building and so began the future he had envisioned. Stephen shared his belief stating, “to be a great custom builder you must get to know your clients so well that you are able to envision what is on their minds even when they may not be able to convey exactly what they are thinking. Custom building is so much more than just a builder-client relationship as we share a very special experience where I come to know and understand my clients at a personal level where relationships and friendships are formed that last far beyond the work we do, often as lifetime friendships. Gulfcon Corp is the culmination of years of searching and planning to find the perfect place to live out the dream. While North Carolina was home for over 50 years, after several visits to the Gulf-Coast and more specifically the Sarasota area the search had ended. With its myriad of people from all over the United States and indeed the world, he had indeed found where he would spend the rest of his life doing what he loves, custom building right here in Paradise.
