Gulf Coast Iguana Sanctuary, Inc. (GCIS) is a dedicated non-profit organization operating for over a decade with the mission to promote public awareness and education regarding green iguana rescue and responsible ownership of exotic pets. Located at 6730 22nd Avenue North in St. Petersburg, Florida, within Pinellas County, GCIS was incorporated on January 7, 2010. The sanctuary serves as a haven for abandoned green iguanas, placing them with adoptive owners who can provide suitable natural habitats. Recently relocated to more expansive facilities at the Science Center's grounds in St. Petersburg, the enhanced space is now triple its original size; however, it remains at maximum capacity due to increasing rescue numbers. In partnership with the Science Center, GCIS integrates educational programming into school curricula and facilitates outreach presentations to foster awareness about exotic pet ownership responsibilities. The organization continues efforts for adoption expansion and actively collaborates on community education projects.
