GreenTeam’s number one focus is customer satisfaction. Hello and thank you for visiting our website. When I started this company in 2009, I had one goal in mind… I didn’t want to just set the bar for plumbing service companies, I wanted to raise it to a whole new level…. There is a famous quote that says “You can’t know where you’re going, until you know where you’ve been”. My story begins in Nassau County New York, in a little town called Elmont. My family had been in the thoroughbred racehorse business for years before I was born. At around age 12, I started working at Belmont racetrack anytime I wasn’t in school. I would clean the horse stalls, clean & refill water and feed buckets, walk the horses after their morning workouts, etc. The winters were not fun at 4am -- un-freezing hundreds of feet of water hose with hot water was my first task of each frigid morning. The racetrack really taught me what hard work and dedication was all about. My parents had divorced when I was two, and my father had joined my grandfather in Miami in his plumbing business. I had traveled back and forth from New York to Miami several times throughout my childhood. It wasn’t until around 14 years old that I began working with the tools and learning the plumbing trade. My father was very “old school” if you will, and taught me the trade in a way not too many get to learn. “Here are the tools and materials I think you will need, call me when you’re done” was his philosophy. I had no idea at the time, that this would be the beginning of what we now call GreenTeam. My father was a minimalist, having just enough tools to make the job happen, and not leaving a margin for error. I MADE A LOT of mistakes very early on in my “career”. I flooded houses, caught a few walls on fire, ruined brand new appliances, all while gaining customer service skills that most kids my age had no clue about. The minute I had my driver’s license, I was off to the races. I met my dad every morning at the Jim Terry and Sons Plumbing “headquarters” which was a small sub shop in Miami. Most mornings started with my dad throwing a bunch of tools and materials in the back of my pickup truck, then handing me either a napkin or ripped newspaper article with what would most likely have a few grammar or numerical errors on it. I would spend a few hours trying to find my first service call, as the address was usually written wrong, along with the phone number. Little did I know that this would one day be the driving force behind Greenteam’s efficiency. I worked for my father for the next 3 years, and quickly learned the tricks of the trade. My days were spent working in neighborhoods that most people wouldn’t drive through. Crawling under section 8 apartment complexes, and working in motels that charged by the hour, not by the night, was a typical day for me. During those years, I had several older folks tell me I should join an apprenticeship program, or do something that allowed for a pension or health insurance. Right around the age of 19, I was injured at work pretty bad, and had to take time off. Being that my father’s company was a “one man band” I had no health insurance or disability insurance. It was at this time that I realized I needed a career change. Construction was booming in 2004, so I had a job offer the next day, and it happened to be with the largest union plumbing contractor in Florida. That very week I walked through the doors of Plumbers and Pipefitter local 719 in Fort Lauderdale and I joined the apprenticeship program, starting school the following month. The next 3 or 4 years I would learn the skills that would ultimately help me start GreenTeam. During my 4th year of school, I was working 40-50 hours a week, plus attending apprenticeship classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and contractor’s exam school on Mondays and Wednesdays. The work ethics I had learned at a young age were about to pay off. In March of 2008 I passed the trade knowledge portion of the Florida Plumbing contractors Exam. Unfortunately I had failed the business side, but I was determined to have that license and start my own business. The recession of 2008 had finally hit me, and I was laid off at the end of my 4th year of apprenticeship. There were no jobs on the horizon, and I was faced with a reality check. Either start my own business, or join the masses on the unemployment line. I brushed up on my accounting books, went to class full time, and took the business side of the test in May of 2008. A 70 was needed to pass the exam that day, and as I exited the classroom after 8 hours, I was beyond nervous. I will never forget staring at my results and seeing that I passed… With a 70… One wrong answer separated success and failure… I was finally ready to be my own boss… legally. In the months to come, I was forced to move out of my house, I traded in my dream car for a service truck, made a business plan, and moved into a friend’s parent’s house - I will be forever grateful to that family. So with no money, no home, and a service truck with no tools, I set out on the journey to start GreenTeam Plumbing Inc. Luckily for me, the timing was perfect, and a man by the name of Pat Kerney agreed to meet with me to discuss my business plan. As I walked through the front door of Kerney and Associates that day, something felt right. I handed my business plan over, discussed what my goals were for the company, and I was told to expect a call in the next few days. Meanwhile I had a fair amount of side work coming in, and was hard at work building a client base.
