General Scenery Staff Selby Sullivan - General Scenery ABOUT GENERAL SCENERY What began as a small operation inside of a garage, evolved into one of the largest and most talented scenic design and production shops in the country. Scenicworks was born in 1994 and years later, morphed into General Scenery. After surviving the residential construction market many years earlier, Master Craftsman, licensed contractor, and UF alumni in Building Construction, Selby Sullivan, looked to break the mold of traditional construction applications. After less than two years of building houses, Selby grew bored with the repetitive construction. At the time, Walt Disney World had recently opened MGM Studios, Universal Studios Orlando was under construction, and the city of Orlando was slated to be Hollywood East. Selby’s desire was to get into the creative construction behind the movie business, but as we all know, Orlando didn’t end up as Hollywood East–it became the ultimate destination of tourist attractions and theme parks. Movie construction prospects shifted to attractions and events in Central Florida, as did Selby’s area of concentration. Soon after leaving residential construction, Selby jumped in head-first, applying his inventive, creative, imaginative spirit, and he began working with San Francisco, California based FM Productions (Filmore Management). FM Productions invented the concert tour business and trail-blazed arenas nationwide for portable staging and lights. FM Productions opened shop in Orlando to answer the call-and-demand from the theme park giants and the burgeoning corporate business meeting market. As one of the first hires in Orlando, Selby helped spearhead multiple staging, theatrical and theme park construction projects for the renowned, California-based company, and made quite a name for himself. After completing a five-year run with FM Productions, Selby took the risk in starting his own company, and in 1994 Scenicworks was born. With hardwork, determination and talent, the business started in his garage and grew into larger spaces solely by word-of-mouth. Without a salesperson or brochures, clients and sales grew rapidly by innovative work and proven productions. As General Scenery over 22 years later, Selby and his creative crew of craftsmen, welders, and tradesmen, continue to deliver top-notch results for the country’s top trade shows, corporate productions, restaurants, and attractions.
