Gainesville Girls Rock Camp
Mission Statement: Gainesville Girls Rock Camp is an organization that uses music and performance as a platform to encourage self-esteem, self-expression, and community for girls and gender non-conforming youth.
GGRC primarily functions as a week-long summer day camp that accepts regional girls aged 9-17 years old. Campers are taught to play an instrument and are placed into bands. With the encouragement of their camp counselors, each band writes a song which they ultimately perform at a live music venue downtown at a public showcase following camp for their friends and families. Throughout the week, the campers also attend workshops aimed at enhancing their self-esteem such as self-defense, poetry & lyric workshops, dance classes, art therapy, women’s history workshops, and guided group discussions about boundaries & consent. As campers gain fluency on their instruments over the week, open mics and jam sessions break out during free time. Volunteers encourage a playful and respectful non-violent atmosphere that facilitates friendship and a supportive and positive camp culture. Gainesville Girls Rock Camp is entirely run by local women-identified and non-binary volunteers, many of whom are musicians themselves and perform in local bands. To keep the camp population diverse, organizers strive to keep camp fees low and offer both full and partial scholarships, as well as free lunch and snacks each day of camp. GGRC is able to cover the costs of camp through community outreach throughout the year which includes musical benefits, film screenings, and tabling, among other forms of outreach.
We have just announced our 2018 Gainesville Girls Rock Camp dates
, please mark your calendars and get in touch if you are interested in volunteering at camp this summer! Help us out by spreading the word to friends who might be interested in volunteering and let us know if you want to be on our 2018 volunteer email list (which will be sparingly used to let you know about upcoming GGRC volunteer opportunities!).
We are excited to be holding camp at a new music-focused art space located in the Grove Street community near downtown Gainesville this year. This new location will support our autonomy and offer opportunities to expand camp activities beyond our two weeks in summer!
Our camp is staffed by women and non-binary volunteers. We need help in the kitchen, to assist in workshops, roadies to haul equipment and run errands, workshop instructors (poetry and lyricism, self-defense, healthy communication, album art, theater and stage antics, intersectional feminism, the science of sound, the math of music, the history of women in music, etc.!) We also need bass players, drummers, guitarists, keyboardists, sound engineers, and vocalists to help out in our music rooms and performers to showcase their music at our lunch concerts throughout camp!
Stay tuned for more details and information about spring events and fundraisers leading up to camp! We couldn’t do camp without you, thanks for your help!
