Arts education within a school district provides many opportunities for growth for the student. It provides the student an opportunity to access an experience that they never realized they may enjoy as well as benefiting them in the form of knowledge, future cultural consumption, tolerance, historical empathy, and critical thinking. At GableStage, we believe the future of theatre can be assured only by the development of young audiences, and in the necessity of quality arts education experiences for ALL students. Therefore, each season GableStage’s Educational Programming addresses the cultural enrichment of Miami-Dade County Public School students and has been doing so since our founding as Florida Shakespeare Theatre in 1979. Our programs, including the Page-To-Stage School Tour, the morning in-house Mainstage performances and our various Outreach Performances, have been seen by over a million students. Our Educational Programming has long targeted students from culturally underserved areas. Of the schools that attended the Educational Programming in the 2015-2016 season, an average of 70.5% of their students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, a common indicator of an underserved student body.
All of our Educational Programming offerings are evaluated annually to provide an in-depth look at the experience provided for the schools, teachers, and students. Direct teacher and student responses acquired via surveys, emails, and interactions with staff evaluate the effectiveness of the programs. It is our goal to receive the following ratings:
We regularly exceed these goals due to the quality of productions and material we offer through our programs.
GableStage’s programming is made possible through the generous support of our sponsors and through the Miami-Dade County Public School System’s Cultural Passport program.

History of GableStage
Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage originally performed the plays of Shakespeare in repertory, using the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. From 1987 to 1992, Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed in the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables, until it was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew. But the theatre’s mission could not be destroyed, and it continued to produce at the Carousel Theatre in Coral Gables in 1993 and 1994. In 1999, the theatre moved to its current home, the historic Biltmore Hotel, and became GableStage.
GableStage
has been producing quality theatrical productions that encompass themes and ideas relevant to the multicultural South Florida community at Coral Gables’ historic Biltmore Hotel. GableStage is the recipient of
GableStage is now one of the longest running and most highly acclaimed theater companies in South Florida striving to present the most vital and cutting edge works of contemporary playwrights worldwide (currently over 100 successful productions). Currently, six plays are mounted annually at the Biltmore Hotel location and productions are regularly transported to area performing arts venues such as the Lyric Theatre, the Joseph Caleb Auditorium, and The Seminole Theatre in order to engage a larger audience and outreach to the community. In addition to community outreach, GableStage works directly with the Miami-Dade Public Schools’ Cultural Passport Program to provide unique cultural access to schools, students, and teachers through school tours and/or attendance at a GableStage production at an offsite venue. Study guides are provided prior to the performances to provide in-depth knowledge for students. Following the performance, a talkback is administered to engage the students and teachers in a conversation about what they experienced. All programs are offered free-of-charge.
In recent news, GableStage has been approved to become the theatre-in-residence at the
