In a matter of mere paragraphs we knew her life was mundane enough to actually count the steps from the bus to home. The fact that she rode a bus indicated her basic economic status, confirmed by the description of her home and the other occupants. Within a page we knew her problem and had already sighed and empathized with her plight. Jojo Moyes hit the essentials that draw a reader in: Who is the story about? How did he/she get to the point where the reader picks up the narrative? What does the character want? (It helps if the reader can relate to this desire.) Finally, what does the character need? If I can understand those four basic elements, I am able to jump into the shoes of the character.
