Our Mission To help meet the healthcare needs of the uninsured residents of Flagler County through the commitment of local volunteers and donations. The Flagler Free Clinic was founded by Dr.John Canakaris, a beloved physician with a history of caring for the area’s indigent population, and Faith Coleman, a nurse who had been diagnosed with cancer at a time when she was uninsured. Having experienced the hardship of being ill without access to care, she was determined to help others who need medical treatment but lack insurance coverage. While her cancer was in remission, Ms. Coleman approached Dr. Canakaris about establishing a free clinic and together they opened the doors of the clinic in February, 2005. Dr. Canakaris died in 2012, and Faith Coleman succumbed to her cancer in 2014. The Free Clinic is a testament to their vision. On the clinic’s first day there were a handful of volunteers and eight patients. In 2014 – 2015, one hundred active volunteers provided care to 2,700 patients. In 2015 – 2016, we expect our patient roster to grow to more than 3,000. To accommodate more patients, we have increased our clinic days to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We have also opened Flagler County’s first free dental clinic, where services include fillings and extractions. Our goal is to expand our services to the community. We are seeking to recruit additional practitioners so that we can treat more patients, and increase the number of specialists our patients can see. We Are The Flagler Free Clinic A volunteer-based, donor-funded clinic that provides The Flagler Free Clinic provides primary care to uninsured, economically-challenged residents of Flagler County. We are staffed by doctors and nurses who volunteer their time. For the majority of our patients, the clinic is their medical home, a place where they can have a sustained relationship with practitioners, obtain prescriptions and often free medication and medical supplies.
