Final Exit Network, Inc. is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to supporting worldwide education and advocacy for right-to-die laws and upholding the individual's right to make autonomous end-of-life decisions. Founded by Derek Humphry, who is also a founder of the Hemlock Society USA and a past president of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies, Final Exit Network played a pivotal role in hosting the 2014 biennial conference of this international federation. This event attracted over 250 participants from 23 countries, offering a global platform for discussion and sharing experiences related to self-determination and end-of-life choices. Set apart from other organizations in the United States, Final Exit Network commits to assisting not only those individuals who are terminally ill but also those facing debilitating conditions such as cancer, ALS, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, emphysema, congestive heart failure, and more. While other organizations claim to ‘serve’ non-terminal patients, they typically limit their services unless the individuals meet terminal criteria. The organization operates with a volunteer-based structure and minimal paid administrative support for managing office tasks, communications, and databases. Unlike many of its counterparts who operate with large staffs and expansive budgets, Final Exit Network stands as an open democracy within the right-to-die movement, allowing members to elect their board representatives through active participation. The organization has faced legal challenges due to Minnesota's stance on 'assisting' in a suicide, which led to a conviction for providing information that facilitated a member's end of life. The Network appealed this decision, asserting that its communication with members is protected under the First Amendment as free speech. Founded in June 2016 and based out of Tallahassee, Florida, Final Exit Network continues to champion individual rights and dignity at an end-of-life stage with notable leadership under officers such as President Brian Ruder. With a strong history anchored by its leaders and founders, including influential members like Faye Girsh, Frank and Jim Chastain, the organization upholds Derek Humphry's ideals through his best-selling publication 'Final Exit,' available widely for those considering their end-of-life options.
