We are guided by our core values which include: safety, professionalism, integrity, responsiveness, and efficiency.  When Bob Zylstra and Marlin Feyen founded Feyen Zylstra in 1980, they had a clear vision of what they wanted to accomplish: to be the first-choice electrical contracting resource for the most demanding industrial and commercial applications in the marketplace. When the business started, it was run out of co-founder, Bob Zylstra’s, garage. Since its humble beginning, Feyen Zylstra has grown to become a national electrical contractor serving clients in virtually every category. Today, we carry the same vision forward with our six branch offices located in Grand Rapids, MI; Kalamazoo, MI; Traverse City, MI; Detroit, MI; Nashville, TN; and Charleston, SC. Over the 38 years that Feyen Zylstra has existed, we’ve never wavered from our purpose: to have a positive impact in the lives of employees, customers, and the community. Each day there are frequent opportunities to make the wrong choices. But we, as individuals and as a company, are intentionally focused on making the right ones. Few companies can match our knowledge base, but that doesn’t always mean instant answers. Often, we must investigate a situation to get the right information. But we will respond promptly to let the client or partner know that we are taking their question seriously and will provide the answer as soon as possible. No one should ever be left hanging. Efficiency is about eliminating waste. It doesn’t mean fast or chaotic. It is about pace. We won’t mistake activity for progress. We are committed to accomplishing the task at hand without wasting material, time, or energy. Efficiency is cost control through planning, doing things right the first time, and ensuring that everyone has the tools and information they need to get the job done right. Safety is an unwavering commitment for all of us at Feyen Zylstra. From the founders of the company to each and every employee, jobsite safety will never be compromised. The safety and well-being of our employees, our customers, and the public is our top priority. Safety is one of our five core values. From their very first day of work at our new employee orientations, each Feyen Zylstra worker is trained in the critical importance of both a safe workplace and safe workplace procedures, and that these two components of their employment are not negotiable. We describe our company as having a culture of safety. Our safety committee, comprised of employees from across the company, acts as a resource for information on the jobsites and works to create a cohesive corporate safety culture. Although our safety policies and procedures are sound, we never want to become complacent. We view and review these on an ongoing basis to keep them viable and current as new products, applications, and information become available. Evidence of Feyen Zylstra's commitment to safety are our continuously improving OSHA recordable incident rate, EMR, and our safety awards. A Feyen Zylstra manager, safety officer, or safety committee member performs a comprehensive inspection at each site, each month. Our “Safety Pays” incentive program provides reward coupons to employees who attend training and consistently exhibit safe behaviors. These coupons may be redeemed for tools or personal protective gear. Evidence of Feyen Zylstra's commitment to safety is the OSHA recordable incident rate and Experience Modification Ratio (EMR), both of which are well below (better than) the national standard. The company's most recent EMR is 0.50. The standard for the construction industry is 1.00. Any rating under that is an indication of a superior safety program. Feyen Zylstra's award-winning safety program has earned the 2016 Platinum STEP (Safety Training and Evaluation Process) Award from Associated Builders and Contractors. In addition, Feyen Zylstra is also an ABC Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC) in which safety is one of four key evaluation components.
