Fascia is richly multi-dimensional tissue that forms our internal soft tissue architecture. It is an essential part of Tensegrity structure in our bodies. The tensile properties of our body require pulling apart action that we provide during assisted resistance stretching in order to make the tissue hydrated, nourished, flexible and healthy. In a tension structure if one segment is tighter than the others it changes the shape and form of the whole structure creating a pulling sensation. This is what happens in the body and these forces create inflexibility, misalignment, pain. It forces other segments to toughen up and take on a role of the underperforming unit.
In other words, our body builds more fascia than needed and even scar tissue for support. In performing the method of assisted Resistance Stretching we are literally finding the tight segments of dense fascia and scar tissue by feeling into your body. While you produce tension and resistance during assisted dynamic eccentric contraction, we stretch these segments to return your tissue into a healthy state.
Flexibility is NOT mostly about the muscles. It is about stripping excess fascia from the body. In Resistance Stretching the myofascial structures are literally stripped of scar tissue and excessive dense fascia while increasing arterial and venous blood flow, synovial fluids, lymphatic drainage, joint capsule pliability, ligament and tendon elasticity and strength, metabolism in and around the muscles and skeletal structures, oxygenation to all tissues, the capacity for elimination of waste products and toxic substances, etc.
Fascia has tremendous tensile strength compared to muscular strength. Scar tissue has exponential tensile strength compared to the fascia. Dense fascia can have tensile strength that is 2-8 x’s the strength of the muscle it surrounds. Normal amounts of fascia are around 2 x’s and dense fascia up to 8x’s the resistive force of the muscles strength. It is important to note that tremendous forces are generated by the stretcher when they are being resisted during assisted Resistance Stretching. It requires this amount of force to break up the fascia. The person generates the force, while the assister moves the person. It is like the person being stretched is a surgeon on himself or herself while the assister helps move them.
