FARMTON DEERING PARK, LLC, Edgewater

In recent years, Farmton was again placed at a crossroads. Population growth and development of the land surrounding Farmton has resulted in the shutdown of nearby sawmills. Changes in the timber markets, both domestic and international, have eroded the economic viability of the independent logging crews who purchase and remove the timber. Many have gone out of business. Miami Corporation began to study new uses for the Farmton tract, as we have in the past. In the 19th century, William Deering founded Deering Harvester, a farm implement company. By the turn of the 20th century, Deering Harvester was part of a multi-company merger that formed International Harvester. In 1917, the descendents of William Deering formed a corporation to invest and steward the family’s assets. Although our company is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the name Miami Corporation was chosen because of the Deering family’s love of the Miami, Florida area where they spent many winters throughout their lives.  Miami Corporation has served as the family’s company ever since. It has continued the legacy of our founders through ongoing philanthropic endeavors and contributions to conservation efforts. Miami Corporation began to study new uses for the Farmton tract, as we have in the past. Farmton is an area of approximately 59,000 acres situated in both Volusia and Brevard counties in east central Florida. It was bought by the Deering family of Chicago starting in the 1920s and benefits from careful stewardship of the land for nearly 90 years.  In fact, the name for our company, As the face of east central Florida continues to change along with the economics of silviculture, Miami Corporation has created a legacy plan for Farmton that will provide a long-term, 50-year vision for the land that is consistent with our company’s stewardship ethic and commitment to best management practices.  The Plan is a model for sustainable forestry with an emphasis on protecting natural areas of regional significance as well as critical wildlife habitat.  The Farmton lands are a keystone property for achieving regional wildlife conservation and connectivity.  It is habitat for black bears and bobcats and provides nesting areas for bald eagles as well as swallowtail kites.  Accuracy of the information provided on this web site is not guaranteed for legal purposes.
