The McGraw and Hill Companies merge to form the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Inc. The Book Company enters the trade-book field with Whittlesey House in February. The first title published is The World's Economic Dilemma, by Ernest Minor Patterson. The secondary school list of Harper & Brothers is merged with the School Department of the Book Company to meet the needs of the post-World War II "baby boom." California Test Bureau (CTB) joins McGraw-Hill, strengthening the Company’s leadership in the elementary and high school education and assessment market. The Book Company acquires the school and college division of Random House, Inc. CTB becomes the first company in the industry to offer measurement-based, formative, online assessment with the launch of its Acuity suite. McGraw-Hill Education becomes the first company to provide universal access to its digital content and tools directly from any learning management system at any college or university. | McGraw-Hill Education acquires the personalized learning software company ALEKS Corporation, strengthening its position as the leader in adaptive technology. Lloyd “Buzz” Waterhouse was named interim President and CEO of McGraw-Hill Education in October 2017. Previously he was the CEO of McGraw-Hill Education from June of 2012 until April of 2014. He was responsible for the successful separation of McGraw-Hill Education from McGraw Hill Financial, now S&P Global, setting up the new company and its subsequent sale to Apollo Global Management. He also led the company through its first year of independence in which many significant operational and financial milestones were achieved. Buzz also served as the CEO of Harcourt Education, a provider of instructional materials, e-learning and testing services for the global education market. Previously, he was CEO and Chairman of The Reynolds & Reynolds Company, the leading provider of automotive retailing solutions. Before Reynolds, Buzz held numerous roles at IBM. He led their strategy and business development functions during Lou Gerstner’s tenure and subsequent turn-around, launched IBM Global Services, and was president of Asia Pacific Services Corporation. Buzz currently serves on the boards of McGraw-Hill Education, JDA, Sparta, Instructure, and Penn State’s Smeal College of Business. Buzz is a graduate of Penn State University and holds an MBA from Youngstown State University. Simon Allen was named President of McGraw-Hill Education’s International Group in March 2018. He is responsible for leading the Group that provides content, educational services and customized learning solutions in more than 60 languages to K-12 schools and higher education institutions in 140 countries outside of the United States. Simon has deep experience in educational publishing having led large teams across six continents focused on K-12 and higher education, as well as science, technical and medical digital and print products for professional, governmental and institutional markets. Before joining McGraw-Hill Education, he was the CEO of Macmillan Education during the company’s transition from print to print-technology. Previously, he was Senior Vice President, International at The McGraw-Hill Companies. Before that, Simon was President, Higher Education at both Pearson Education EMEA and Prentice Hall Europe. Earlier in his career, he held sales leadership roles with the Times Mirror Group in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. Simon received his BA with honors from Middlesex University School of Business and completed Executive Education programs in Leadership and Strategic Management at the London School of Business. Angelo T. DeGenaro serves as Chief Information Officer for McGraw-Hill Education, joining the company in January 2015. Angelo began working for The McGraw-Hill Companies in 2004, most recently as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at McGraw Hill Financial. In that role, he was responsible for enterprise architecture, global infrastructure delivery, and IT risk management, among other areas. Scott Grillo was named President of McGraw-Hill Education’s Professional group in March 2018. He is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s core publishing program and online subscription products in the Medical, Technical, Business, and Test Prep categories. Previously, he served as Vice President, Global Professional Markets. Since joining the company in 1996, Scott has served as Publisher for several divisions within the Professional group and has led the digital transformation of the business in all aspects of platform development, new product launches, technology innovation, and digital delivery including the portfolio expansion of McGraw-Hill Education’s Access products. He is the Company’s representative on the Executive Council of the Association of American Publishers’ Professional and Scholarly division. Scott began his publishing career with Prentice Hall where he held sales and marketing roles within both the Higher Education and Professional Technical Reference divisions.
