Our foundations were laid in the 1920s when our predecessor company was formed to insure The General Electric Company's (GE) business activities (something we're still doing almost a century later). So it's not a surprise that when GE decided to expand in 1966 to offer its employees discounted auto and home insurance characterized by exceptional, GE-focused service, that Electric Insurance Company was the result. Now, more than 40 years later, we still help many GE families. But much of our business comes from the general public. People believe in our way of business. Today, individuals and families with no formal ties to General Electric hold more than half of our home and car insurance policies. Generally speaking, Electric Insurance is a funny name for an insurance company. Here's how it happened: The Electric Insurance Company name derives from our historical relationship with one of the world's largest and most respected companies — the General Electric Company . Back in 1927, our predecessor, Electric Mutual Liability Insurance Company, was formed by GE to provide it with Workers' Compensation insurance in Massachusetts. By the 1950's, the company expanded its relationship with GE to handle a wide array of its business insurance nationally. In 1966, Electric Insurance Company was established by Electric Mutual Insurance Company with a new charter: provide real value in auto and home insurance — and the same care and commitment to exceptional service — to GE employees. Today, almost half of our auto and home customers come from outside the General Electric family. That's a strong statement about the value we bring to people's lives. Independent sources agree — our claims department recently won the Customer Service Department of the Year category in the American Business Awards , the Better Business Bureau gave us an A+, and A.M.
