DRUM MUFF, INC., APOPKA

Drum Muff I decided long ago that there had to be a simple solution. Boy was I wrong. We first started out using hot rod sticks. The sticks not only were expensive, but they blew apart after only one or two sessions. Worse yet, the cymbals sounded horrible. We had tried all of the common products… the gels, drum rings, etc. Nothing worked well. We finally resorted to purchasing a Plexi shield. That was a total waste of money. We used it once, it was heavy and it scratched up even though we were careful. We ended up selling it for a fraction of what we paid for it. In looking at all of the dampening products on the market, there seemed to be a similar thread – gel based products. I started thinking about how that works and why it did not do the job well. If you look at a cymbal recorded in slow motion (or a drum head), you will see that it warps out of shape. The gels offer little resistance to that motion. I thought of the solution of using a metal – aluminum, to give more resistance. The result was even shocking to me. Applying Aluminum over a semi rigid adhesive rubber base was able to affect a much more targeted and significant resistance to the vibrations in cymbals and drum heads. Drum Muff was born… Nick Reciniello, the former drummer in my band, was the first one that I showed my invention to. He was positively awestruck. We immediately began to test our new product. We ran it through heat and cold tests. We compared the effects in a controlled environment and our Drum Muff’s outperformed every other product we tested – not by a small margin, but by leaps and bounds. Nick had an idea to send our original Drum Muff to Dr. Steve Gadd. Believe it or not, he called me and thanked me. I asked how he liked the Drum Muff. He said he loved the idea, but had several suggestions regarding improving its composition. He gave me several ideas and I went straight to the 3M company and started our search for new materials. We knew the aluminum layer was key. The adhesive and damping material needed to be upgraded. We had 3M Corporation overnight materials almost daily for testing. After about 6 weeks or more, we came up with the perfect combination. They made a special adhesive for us that will stick to virtually anything (and not fall off) while retaining the ability to easily remove it and reuse it over and over. If the adhesive gets dirty, it simply is cleaned with soap and water. The top layer is now made of a water-proof, UV proof, tear proof polyester. The layer under the 5 mils of aluminum is a 3M Corporation medium density damping foam. The combination is patent pending and significantly improved our original product. Much thanks to Dr. Gadd. I would like to thank Nick Reciniello and his family for all they have done for the company. Without their help, we would have never been this successful. Nick recently took another job and is no longer with the company. I wish him much success, as it is well deserved. All of our products are hand made in Apopka, FL USA. Drum Muffs gate your drums and cymbals without sacrificing attack or cymbal wash. Drum Muffs are 2″ squares of self adhesive squares made up of a state of the art, scientifically designed, hybrid of several materials. The top layer is a waterproof and tear proof polyester layer. The second layer is 5 mils of pure aluminum. This layer is part of our patent pending design. The third layer is a proprietary custom 3M Corporation gating material made for Drum Muff. The combination of these two materials does what no other product can do. Aluminum specifically tames overtones and ring using sheer strength – allowing a crisp attack and pure sound to get through. The bottom and last layer is made of a custom designed 3M adhesive that will adhere to drums and cymbals without fear of them falling off – all while having the ability to remove and relocate with ease. If the adhesive gets dirty from the oils in your skin or dirty heads, simply wash the entire Drum Muff in soap and water, let dry and you are good to go! The entire Drum Muff is not affected by heat or cold. Nothing to melt and get gooey or attract dust. Daru Jones collaborates with Drum Muff. Drum Muff does three things: A Drum Muff will reduce the volume of cymbals and drums by 3 db. That is not a great amount, but does help quite a bit in recording studios and smaller venues. That being said, many of our artists use them in arenas and large venues for the second thing Drum Muffs do. Drum Muffs eliminate unwanted ring and overtones WITHOUT inflicting a muddy tone like gels do. You get the great attack and true unaltered sound of your drum – without the unwanted booming, ring, and overtones. 3. Drum Muffs gate drums and cymbals. Recording studios that have tried them once, insist on using them every time they record drums. Sound engineers consider them one of the most valuable tools in their arsenal. The patent pending hybrid blend offers gating, volume reduction and overtone elimination – either singularly, or as a trio (depending on sizes used and placement). Drum Muffs actually enhance the sound of your drums and allows for a bit of ring and still lets them be “open” sounding with a nice crisp attack. Wrangle in that unwanted overtone on your floor tom instantly with one large Drum Muff. Use 3 large Drum Muffs on each head of the kick drum to allow the removal of the sound absorbing pillow. Hear, for the first time, the pure sound the kick drum was designed to offer. Use a Drum Muff just below the bell of a cymbal to reduce the volume by as much as 3 decibels without any noticeable difference in the “sound” or “wash” of the cymbal. This is key when playing in small venues. We all know that cymbals can cut through vocal microphones and create havoc!
