Five Centuries in the Making Step back in time and hear the story of the region’s first inhabitants – the Tequesta Indians – as we begin our walk at the famed and mysterious Miami Circle that overlooks the current Port of Miami on the Miami River. See landmark structures such as the Alfred I DuPont and the Seybold Building. Hear the true and intriguing stories that accompany these sites, such as how over 60 prisoners escaped from the top floors of the Miami Courthouse and how Maurice Gusman saved the majestic Olympia Theater from being demolished. Follow the personal tales of the many different types of people who have moved to Miami chasing fortune or running from hardship. Although now physically surrounded by a humming commercial center, these stories help us envision how downtown Miami once looked. Occasional Mediterranean-revival and art deco buildings jostling for space with brand-new, high rise luxury condominiums help create the mental picture of an ever-changing Miami. Our adventure through five centuries of Miami’s past draws to an end as we approach the Freedom Tower, Miami’s own Statue of Liberty. History may not be the first thing that comes to mind when exploring the busy streets of one of the most modern cities in the US, but this walking tour leaves guests with a new and surprising perspective of the Magic City. This evening tour, conducted in the light of an antique oil lantern starts by exploring the mystery of one of North America's most important and controversial archaeological sites: the Miami Circle. The prehistoric circle, 38 feet in diameter and located amidst downtown Miami’s gleaming high-rises, was cut into the limestone bedrock by the ancient Tequesta Indian Tribe who inhabited this area more than 2,000 years ago. Your guide will help piece together the amazing mystery that is the Miami Circle. Next, we move on to the ornate and mournful Miami City Cemetery, a restored landmark that is a solemn reminder of Miami’s dramatic history in the radically transforming area around the Performing Arts Center. We are visiting the gravesites of long-deceased pioneers and settlers. Their true stories will unravel what made Miami great. If the grounds could talk, voices would relate tales of dark Santeria and voodoo rituals among the memorials of Miami’s oldest families. Learn how they lived and died when Miami was just a sleepy little village. This is a place not to be missed! • Two bottled waters provided per participant. • Personal flotation devices are provided. • Private evening opening of boutique cigar manufacturing facility hosted by members of a five generation Cuban cigar-making family. We pass the original Indian trading post - the Stranahan House - which provided Fort Lauderdale with the first auspices of civilization. After exploring some of the architecturally diverse neighborhoods that stretch along the river, we cycle through the marine district with its cavern-like metal sheds housing incredibly large yachts in various stages of maintenance and repair. The final leg of our journey consists of an ascent up the 17th Street Causeway Bridge and a rollercoaster descent back to our starting point. Dragonfly Expeditions Join us on a leisurely 7-mile bike ride around Old Palm Beach which promises to bring to life this buttoned-down resort enclave that first became famous as a giddy, 1920’s era playground. We are retracing the Old Lake Trail towards the northern tip of the island as we pass under a cooling canopy of native and exotic trees and manicured flora of every hue. Witness the architectural splendor of Addison Mizner’s Mediterranean-revival palaces set amid the backdrop of semi-tropical seclusion. Let our knowledgeable guides help you discover the extraordinary history of a place once known only to coastal Indians and lonely pioneers. Unlike many other rivers that have been forced into channels by development, this river remains virtually unchanged. Paddle this reminder of Old Florida and explore flora, fauna and history unique to these meandering shorelines. Come with us on a journey celebrating a small corner of Florida’s riveting history. We are visiting the area of the Jupiter Inlet and its tributary waterways up to Hobe Sound that was once home to three little towns by the sea. Recount the collected chronicles of a region that has been at the crossroads of Florida history for over a thousand years. Our first stop is the Nature Conservancy’s Blowing Rocks Preserve, a great example of rare fully restored coastal strand noted for its performing geyser-like rocks that send plumes of water streaming upwards at high tide. Lastly, climb with us up the 108-foot-tall Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. This striking, bright red sentinel rests upon an ancient Indian mound, making the breathtaking view from the top the most stunning in all of Palm Beach County. Delight in the story of this lighthouse which was first lit on July 10, 1860 and has survived wars, hurricanes, fire and the ravages of time to become one of the most romantic and well-loved structures in Florida. Lead by the oldest and most prestigious tour company in South Florida, Dragonfly Expeditions, The Dragonfly Expeditionary Club Philosophy Dragonfly Expeditions and the Dragonfly Expeditionary Club were born of the philosophy that environmentally responsible “green” travel should incorporate not only the flora and fauna, but also the culture, history and people of a destination.
