DOULA DO RIGHT, LLC, LEANDER

Jenny Hernandez, Owner/Operator of Doula Do Right, LLC I’ve always been fascinated by the human body – how we’re designed, how we function, and what we’re capable of (especially in childbirth!). This fascination in the body – our abilities to self-heal, the limits of our endurance and the power of the human touch – inspired me toward a career path in massage therapy. After getting my license, I pursued my own practice, while also helping at a nearby resort’s spa. I simultaneously got hired at the resort itself, starting a career in the hotel industry as an event manager coordinating weddings and corporate events. That eventually led to my meeting my husband (also in the business) and our future family. We are what they call a “Marriott marriage”. While my career in hospitality took off, I wasn’t looking for a change, but one certainly happened. After investing our time (and money!) into taking the classes and creating our birth plan, we felt fully informed and prepared for the birth. However, I still wanted some assurance that our wishes would be advocated for. I wanted to have a fair shot at this and needed somebody that spoke the hospital’s language, someone who was fully invested in supporting us and our birth goals. So, we called mom. As a nurse herself, I knew she could bridge the communication gap between what we wanted and what may have been routine for the nurses. She could accurately assess my progress and help when needed so that I could completely relax and solely focus on laboring. So we asked her to be a part of the birth, and of course, she said yes (who doesn’t want to be there for the birth of their first grandchild?). As my pregnancy progressed, and with her on board, I was ready to meet my baby (really ready to be done with the hobbit feet!). When the day arrived, we fell back to our training – and we needed it, especially with a 23-hour labor! We labored at home as long as possible, and having both her and my husband there, I had a total sense of peace, even after our doctor called to see when we were coming! Once we got settled at the hospital, we quickly found our groove and after another hour of labor, I hit transition. Jordan (my husband) did a wonderful job of coaching me through it. Transition was tough, but his encouragement and the double hip squeeze did the trick. I quickly regained my rhythm and focused on the progress. Thankfully mom was there to step up when he needed a break. (It was tough for him, too!) I made it through transition and after two pushes second stage was complete. Jocelyn was here- I finally had her in my arms! I did it! We had a vaginal, un-medicated birth in a hospital. I put Jocelyn to the breast and the oxcytocin started flowing. I was in love and on cloud nine. I’ve never felt God’s presences as closely as I did while in that birth room. It’s impossible to describe the “birth-high,” and no matter how hard I try there’s really no amount of words that can ever do it justice. My heart was full and I felt whole. I just gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl with the help of my faith, my loving husband and my doula (mom). Jocelyn’s birth was so empowering that I remember thinking to myself if I’m capable of doing that, I’m more than capable of caring for her. He chose HER for me and ME for her, so of course I was more than enough for her. Having this truth locked in my heart came in handy during those wee hours of the night when you feel inadequate or just plain exhausted. Because let’s be honest, it’s tough being a mom sometimes. The weeks flew by and it was time to go back to work. I was always very driven and career focused, so going back was never a question, rather an understanding. I had a very lucrative career in hospitality, one that I enjoyed and was exceptionally good at. Selfishly, I didn’t want to let go of that, but I couldn’t escape the feeling that I was being called to something bigger and far greater than what I had been doing. Something purposeful on a totally different level. I’ll be honest, I was VERY intimidated and almost paralyzed by fear and self-doubt. I was being called to do something that I’d never done before and being stretched WAY out of my comfort zone. Once God gave me confirmation after confirmation I finally surrendered to His will and He’s been leading me every step of the way since then. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING fell into place after that.
