Typical production quantities range from 250 pieces to thousands. Machining is in-house, in-flow, and specifically designed to handle any casting that can be produced at Dotson. Value added service coordination of machining, heat treatment, and painting is a specialty that Dotson customers enjoy. As a privately held company, Dotson Iron Castings, based out of Mankato, Minnesota produces ductile iron castings which adhere to the ARRA. All products sold by Dotson Iron Castings are manufactured in our Mankato, Minnesota facility. This “bookend” Honor Casting is gratefully given to any who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The only requirement is that it must be personalized with a name plate and there must be a connection to an employee of the company (family, friend, neighbor, etc.). The casting was designed by Dotson Company pattern maker John Hatcher with assistance from three other Vietnam era veterans. Each leaf was individually carved from wax and placed on the master pattern. Dotson is the only North American jobbing foundry with 100% autopouring. The units provide tight control on both the flow rate and pouring height – translating into more consistent castings. The final ferro-silicon inoculations are computer controlled and added automatically to the metal stream as it is being poured into the mold. Dotson’ s fully automated finishing room is focused on world class takt time and flow. Degating is done with hydraulic wedges, and all in-house grinding is done with CNC controlled grinders or a trim press. Inspection and shop work orders are online and in real time which eliminates the need for paper work orders and improves communication across all shifts. We use only the best quality Mills and Lathes in order to ensure the production of a quality product and eliminate issues for our customers. Lead times are kept low because the machine shop is located in the production flow of the foundry, castings are machined in-line just a few feet from the finishing department.
