Small Business Review For the last ten years, the trend in new home construction has been to build energy-efficient homes. But Bill Decker, Sr. and his company, Decker Homes, has been building energy-efficient homes since they started in 1981, and now are on the forefront of the Net Zero homes movement. But Bill has always been ahead of the curve. Taking a conservative approach to his business, he was positioned well to ride out the housing crash and subsequent recession. But it was a different crises that forged his approach to home construction. "We had just gone through the energy crises of the 1970's. That period resonated with me and I became passionate about building homes that were energy efficient," said Bill. "It's one of the cornerstones (of the company)." Decker Homes has demonstrated that passion by building over 750 homes since 1981. Their accomplishments include Deer Valley, the greenest development in northwest Ohio. Deer Valley includes a wooded conservation area and a bio-cell, which naturally clenas runoff water before returning it to lakes and streams. Today, Bill's focus is on building Net Zero homes - homes that produce as much energy as they consume. They include numerous technologically advanced products, like triple-pane windows, geothermal heat pumps, LED lighting, and solar electric photovoltaic roof shingles. Over the last ten years, the cost of these products has decreased while quality and effectiveness has increased. But according to Bill, building a Net Zero home starts with a foundation of energy efficiency. "For every dollar you spend on energy-efficient construction, you save two dollars on energy costs," he said. Decker Homes is well on its way toward building all Net Zero homes. They have completed one for a homeowner already, and are building their first Net Zero model home this year in Deer Valley, the first net zero model home in the state of Ohio. Bill believes the future of new home construction is in Net Zero homes, which cost the homeowner nothing to operate. "This will be the norm in this country when your kids and grandkids are buying houses," said Bill. It's yet another example of Decker Homes being ahead of the curve.
