In August of 1998, Dance Empire opened at the corner of 128th Street on the west side of the highway. It was a newly constructed two studio dance space that was made out of plywood and mirrors. A hand-made dance studio that Angel put her heart into. By December of 1998, the word had spread around Miami that something big, something new was happening in dance in the “Falls area.” All were a buzzing. Dancer Magazine’s Owen Goldmen stated, ” I have never seen such a successful, growing for a beginning for any studio in the country!” After two years in that location, it was becoming way too small. They were outgrowing the space they called home. The dance groups from Dance Empire were performing all over Miami. They were in the King Orange Bowl Parade, Vizcaya, Half-Time shows, you name it. They were winning first all over the country in competition after competition and the word was spreading all the way to LA and NY. With Angel, and Tawanna loving what they were doing, and it apparently showing all over the country, Dance Empire’s reputation had taken on a life of its own. Dance Empire moved into a new location in 2002. A battle with Pinecrest to say the least. Would they allow a dance studio where a furniture store use to be? After much deliberation, the request was granted. A beautiful 5 studio, state of the art flooring, totally remodeled studio appeared on US1 making Dance Empire one of the most prestigious studios in the nation. In 2003, Dancer Magazine rated Dance Empire as one of the Top 10 dance studios in the nation. In 2008 Angel decided to pursue her dream and started the Elite of Dance Empire, a company of 50 hand selected students that she would train to represent Dance Empire at local performances, and in competition. Both entities, The Elite of Dance Empire and the Dance Empire School moved to their current location across the street from the Falls Shopping Center in 2009. Today the studio consists of six dance rooms, all with spring loaded flooring and state of the art sound system and technologies.met, consectetur, adipisci velit, sed quia nons. From television shows, to professional dance companies to MTV video music videos you can spot Dance Empire’s former/current students. The reputation, love, and growth of the studio continue to be present throughout Miami and the country. Angel, and Tawanna, are still following the heartbeat on every decision made and every dance created. Angel has often said that, “the heartbeat has yet to steer me wrong, as long as I continue to listen to it, the studio will and shall remain the heartbeat it is today. The heartbeat that makes a dancer have to Dance Empire continues to take dancers to the next level of professional dance, the dancing that makes it an art! Angel’s dancers have won titles such as Best Dancer in the Nation, in every division, (mini, junior, teen & senior levels). In 2012 one of the group pieces, “Violin” won Best Overall Contemporary piece in the Nation. Just this year, we won the Best Senior Contemporary piece in the nation with “Chrysalis.” Dance Empire has alumni dancing all over the world with the Alvin Ailey Company, casting rolls on Broadway, dancing with famous performers such as Madonna, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake…casting rolls on Step Up Revolution…being the top male on So You Think You Can Dance… being accepted at Juilliard upon graduation, along with all the major Dance Programs at the most popular Universities such as Florida State University. Dance Empire truly is …the one and only place to study to dance in Miami…the original!
