CSX was for years the preferred transportation provider for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus, delivering cheer and crowd-pleasing spectacles across the Eastern United States. The iconic show may have folded its tents for the final time in 2017, but many of the historic railcars that once carried the circus are continuing to delight a new and appreciative audience.
The CSX team, assisted by volunteers, transported the cars to the location and then used two large cranes to lift the 16 circus cars from the active rail line onto the Kirby center’s tracks. The not-for-profit organization has created a fully functioning railroad to help fulfill its mission to “keep kids on track.” Daryl Kirby, the founder of the facility, said, “There is no way we could have done this by ourselves. If it hadn’t been for CSX involvement, we would not have this train.”
“Transporting the historic rail cars to Kirby Family Farm will make a lasting impact in the lives of at-risk and special needs children for years to come,” said Dan Labyak, CSX Clearance Bureau manager. “We’re proud to have been a part of the move and in helping Kirby Family Farm continue its mission.”
Kirby expressed his gratitude and support of the team at CSX, saying, “It takes a village to raise a child and what we are doing is trying to help raise children and CSX is part of our village.”
Railroad and city officials announced at a joint press conference March 15 that CSX had agreed to sell 4.5 miles of inactive rail corridor, covering 63 acres, to become a key segment in the Atlanta BeltLine project, which eventually will encircle the city with 22 miles of trails, transit and parks.
using two large cranes. While the primary mission of Kirby Family Farms is to serve at-risk children, the interactive educational experience also hosts veterans groups. Daryl Kirby, founder of the non-profit, is a rail enthusiast and historian that grew up in a railroad family, spending time with his grandfather who was a lifetime railroader, even serving in a World War II railroad unit.
, CSX Clearance Bureau manager. “As an active member of the U.S. Navy Reserves it was rewarding to help Sarge transition to his next assignment, where he will continue to serve the community and bring cheer to at-risk youth, veterans groups and others that visit Kirby Family Farms.” Helping transport Sarge combines Dan’s professional vocations and passions. In addition to his role at CSX leading clearance projects, Dan serves as a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves, flying P-3C Orions out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – March 19, 2018 – CSX Corporation (NASDAQ: CSX) today announced the appointment of Angela (“Angie”) C. Williams as vice president and controller as successor to Andrew (“Drew”) L. Glassman, who has provided notice that he will be leaving the Company to pursue other opportunities. Glassman has agreed to stay on through June 30, 2018, to assist with the transition.
CSX Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Frank Lonegro said: “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Angie Williams to the position of vice president and controller. Angie’s depth of knowledge of our business and her strong accounting acumen will be invaluable as we continue to build momentum behind our strategy to become the best run railroad in North America.”
CSX, based in Jacksonville, Florida, is a premier transportation company. It provides rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services and solutions to customers across a broad array of markets, including energy, industrial, construction, agricultural, and consumer products. For over 190 years, CSX has played a critical role in the nation's economic expansion and industrial development. Its network connects every major metropolitan area in the eastern United States, where nearly two-thirds of the nation's population resides. It also links more than 230 short-line railroads and more than 70 ocean, river and lake ports with major population centers and farming towns alike.
Railroads have flourished under the balanced regulatory approach introduced by the Staggers Act of 1980, but some groups continue to advocate for increased regulation to benefit their narrow interests. The rail industry must continue to vigorously defend itself against proposals that would require competing railroads to open up their networks for the benefit of their competitors and even cap the rate of return that railroads can earn for operating their business.
The Section 45G credit allows the nation’s short lines to preserve and upgrade rail service for thousands of rail customers and communities that might otherwise have no rail service. By extending this credit and making in permanent, Congress can remove the annual uncertainty that this important measure will continue to be available to support local economic growth.
Face-to-face meetings with the lawmakers and staff members who vote on key issues that impact railroads have proven to be a highly effective means to help representatives understand the impact of their decisions on the railroads that serve businesses in their communities and create jobs for their constituents.
“CSX’s performance continued to strengthen in the fourth quarter, building upon the scheduled railroading model that was instituted by Hunter Harrison” said James M. Foote, president and chief executive officer. “I’m excited about the progress we are making and am confident we have the right team in place to achieve our goal of becoming the best railroad in North America.”
