CROC ENCOUNTERS, INC., TAMPA

Buc is a male American Crocodile. This crocodile is the largest animal at Croc Encounters at over 12 feet long. The two had been housed together their whole lives but after the move from the zoo, Buc established the new enclosure as his territory. He would not allow Seminole into the water and would not allow him to eat. The two were separated and they have both been doing well on their own since then. One of Buc’s favorite things to do is dig holes in his enclosure. He is a big boy and he has burrowed holes long enough for his entire body to fit completely into. Buc was moved from his original pond to a new earth pond. Since then his pond has been redone several times and he was finally moved into a larger enclosure inhabited by large alligators and another crocodile. After it was determined that had become to aggressive he was moved to a concrete pond with the help of Animal Planet’s Gator Boys. Jellybean is a Red Tegu from the Tampa Bay area that is a little chunky to say the least. He has been with us at Croc Encounters since 2006. He was placed at our facility by his pet owners and he is an example of what happens when your diet consists mainly of hotdogs; when he arrived he was extremely over weight. Since he has been at Croc Encounters, Jellybean has gotten a more balanced, healthy diet. His weight has returned to normal although he still carries his characteristic chubby cheeks. Amos is an American Alligator and the first that ever would call Croc Encounters home. He is not just any ordinary alligator though; he is also the reason the organization was established in 2005. He is one of the largest alligators at the sanctuary and by far the most favored by our group. We even decided to name our first son after him – JOHN AMOS! Spike and Bertha share an enclosure at Croc Encounters and still enjoy each other’s company after many long years of living together. Spike continues to travel for events as an animal ambassador. Croc Encounters is a non-profit conservation and educational facility that provides a sanctuary to unwanted reptiles. Croc Encounters was established in January of 2005 as a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to rescuing unwanted reptiles. While crocodilians have always been our main focus we have extended our haven to unwanted reptiles, birds, and mammals. In addition to being a sanctuary we are an educational facility open to the public for guided tours, self- guided tours, and events. In the summer of 2008 Croc Encounters opened its gates for guided tours after three years of hard work and dedication. Tours were offered to members, schools and other groups on a scheduled basis. After several years of offering strictly guided tours the demand for self-guided, walk-through admission grew stronger and Croc Encounters closed the grounds to the public for renovations. In April of 2013 Croc Encounters re-opened the grounds for self-guided tours on Saturdays. "Sneak Peek Saturdays" offers a special up close and personal look at areas of the park. Croc Encounters still continues to offer personal guided tours, tours for schools and groups as well as special events every day of the week. Exciting experiences also extend beyond the facility grounds. Our education teams consisting of experienced volunteers and handlers reach the community at events such as birthday parties, summer camps, school programs, library programs and more! Croc Encounters has offered educational programs, traveling exhibits and displays throughout the Greater Tampa Bay region as well as Nationwide since 2005.
