Country Joe's Nursery, Inc. was established in the spring of 1979 when Joe, a real estate professional with a passion for gardening, ventured into the nursery business alongside a partner. The company was named after his childhood nickname 'Country Joe', a testament to his enthusiasm for life and horticulture. Under Joe's leadership, David Englert joined as manager/grower in 1981 following experience at Naugle’s Nursery and United Brands Floriculture. The 1980s were marked by Joe's involvement with the nursery, which became his favorite part of each day. Tragically, after battling a fatal illness that began with severe abdominal pain in late 1988 leading to a cancer diagnosis, Joe passed away shortly after Christmas in 1989. At this challenging time, David Englert was presented the opportunity and subsequently purchased the nursery from Joe’s estate. The following decade involved prayers for God's provision to relocate the business, culminating in the purchase of an 80-acre site near its present location in 1999. Previously used for row crops up until the 1950s before being abandoned agriculturally, the new site was overtaken by invasive trees. Despite these challenges, Country Joe’s Nursery has flourished at this locale under the leadership of David Englert and his wife Brenda, who serves as President, along with Jo Ingram as Vice President.
