In 1988, a group of pioneering scientists and physicians led to the first umbilical cord blood transplant in the world, which was performed by Dr. Eliane Gluckman, and successfully treated and cured Matthew Farrow (seen in photo below) of a rare and life-threatening disease called Fanconi Anemia. Matthew, a loving husband and father, is alive and doing well today thanks to the wonderful work of these medical pioneers who transplanted the umbilical cord blood provided by his then baby sister, instead of utilizing the stem cells from her bone marrow.
Thus far, contributions to the CORD:USE Foundation have allowed the Foundation to make grants available to patients with life-threatening illnesses, in need of financial assistance, throughout the U.S. to help defray the costs of cord blood transplantation and therapy which are not covered by insurance. The CORD:USE Foundation has also provided a grant to a family support program which assists families of cord blood transplant patients.
The CORD:USE Foundation is proud to have Stephen Sprague, an umbilical cord blood transplant recipient, helping to administer the grant program. Mr. Sprague was diagnosed thirteen years ago with chronic myelogenous leukemia and became one of the initial adult patients to benefit from a cord blood transplant in 1997. Since his transplant, he has been cancer free and has become an avid “Cord Blood Crusader,” sharing his unique message of hope and encouragement with thousands of patients, families and caregivers. The published accounts of his transplant experiences have been frequently cited, and he is often asked to testify in Washington in support of cord blood stem cell therapies.
We invite you to join us in helping patients, families and researchers in the advancement of cord blood stem cell medical therapies and science. Your contribution can help a patient in need or may help save lives.
Contributions are 100% tax deductible. A receipt will be mailed following contributions by check or provided electronically following contributions by credit card.
Privacy is very important to us. Therefore, we will not sell, rent or provide any information about you to a third party. Thank you for your support of the mission of the CORD:USE Foundation.
