Cooley Biotech LLC is a limited partnership formed in 2008 with the goal of providing media for production of bovine embryos in vitro that optimize embryo yield and freezability.
Its signature product, BBH7, was designed with this goal in mind. Work at the University of Florida indicates that culture of bovine embryos in BBH7 results in superior blastocyst yield and pregnancy rate for cryopreserved embryos than embryos cultured in synthetic oviduct fluid.
The inspiration for the name of the company comes from the mythological Brown Bull of Cooley, Donn Cúailnge, who was the center of a war between Queen Maeve of Connacht and the warriors of Ulster lead by the boy hero Cú Chulainn as related in the Irish heroic epic, the Táin Bó Cúailnge (Cattle Raid of Cooley).
It was said of the bull that “Every day it would bestride fifty cows, which calved the very next day”. It is embryonic development like that that makes the name Cooley a most appropriate one for a company manufacturing a superior product for culture of bovine embryos.
