CompPharma works with member workers’ comp PBMs to identify and prioritize challenges, and then sets about finding solutions members can cost-effectively share. Once fairly insignificant – less than 3% of comp medical expenses – pharmacy costs have steadily grown alongside overall medical costs. By 2003, they were increasing at an alarming rate of 17.8% year, and today, pharmacy represents nearly 14.5% of comp medical expenditures. Paduda and his colleague Helen King Patterson gathered a group of comp PBM leaders to openly discuss industry-wide issues. That forum led to the creation of CompPharma as a vehicle for delivering solutions. Prior to forming his own company, Paduda was with MetraComp, a United Health Care Company specializing in managed care for workers’ compensation and group disability; Travelers Health Company; Liberty Mutual; and American International Healthcare, the managed care subsidiary of AIG. CompPharma Vice President Helen King Patterson is a senior public relations consultant specializing in managed care, health care and workers’ compensation. In addition to managing CompPharma, Patterson operates , a public relations firm that builds awareness of companies and their services through media relations, consulting on social media, marketing communications and arranging speaking engagements. The firm has experience in a number of industries and specializes in workers’ compensation and medical cost containment. Based in North Carolina, the firm serves clients throughout the United States. CompPharma Members CompPharma is a consortium of the nation’s leading PBMs that are active in workers’ compensation. Pharmacy cost management involves much more than the discounting the price per pill. Utilization, medical trend, third-party billers, physicians’ prescribing practices, new drugs on the market and the timing of patent expirations, along with individual state’s varying laws and regulations impact the costs of comp pharmacy. To keep abreast of cost drivers and the constantly changing world of workers’ comp, PBMs are banding together under CompPharma to develop tools they can share to combat the high costs of pharmacy.
