COMPASSION MEDICINE, INC., Raleigh

Our Mission: Our mission is to help children in poverty-stricken, third-world countries who suffer from debilitating, painful, or disfiguring medical conditions gain access to world-class healthcare to improve their health and bring hope to their lives. Our mission is accomplished without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, or ability to pay for their care. Compassion Medicine envisions a world in which no child suffers physically or emotionally from a serious medical condition. Our vision is accomplished by partnering with missionaries/pastors, missions organizations, and physicians in countries outside of the U.S. to identify children in need while also networking with hospitals, physicians, and other like-minded organizations and volunteers in the U.S. and other countries to obtain the appropriate medical care necessary for the children. Compassion Medicine is committed to successfully accomplishing our mission by: Dean Jones, PH.D. is a medical missionary and healthcare professional with 21 years of healthcare experience including the clinical, academic, and pharmaceutical settings. He has many years of experience in pharmaceutical drug development, clinical research, medical education, and has held multiple scientific and leadership roles in the healthcare industry. In addition to his experience in the pharmaceutical industry, he maintains an active role as a medical missionary helping others around the world with special medical needs. His particular interest has been helping children in poverty-stricken third-world countries with serious medical conditions obtain the medical care they need. His education includes a Bachelor’s and two Doctorate degrees all with Honors. Bert Bowden, M.D. is an eye surgeon with a specialization in oculo-plastics who has many years of experience in the use of many cosmetic and reconstructive treatments. He is particularly qualified for plastic and reconstructive surgery involving the face and eyes and is one of less than 800 people in the world with special qualifications and training to address this particular aspect of cosmetic surgery. Dr. Bowden is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology, is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and received additional training in Orbital and Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is also actively involved with medical mission work providing eye care in many parts of the world and operates his own medical non-profit Missionaries/Pastors (from countries outside the U.S.) with missionaries and pastors all over the world to identify children they come into contact with that need special surgery due to a serious medical condition. They often have relationships with such children and their families from either their churches or communities and serve a valuable role not only in the identification of children in need but also provide ongoing follow-up on the child’s progress once the child has their surgery and are back in their home country. Compassion Medicine stays in close contact with them to ensure the child’s needs continue to be met and appropriate follow-up is conducted. Medical Missions Organizations These organizations often send short-term medical teams to various countries around the world to treat children in need. However, once on the field, they often identify some children with serious medical conditions that require a more involved surgery than they can offer in that setting and refer them to Compassion Medicine for surgery in the states. participants in the evaluation and treatment of children in need. Compassion Medicine has developed close working relationships with an extensive network of medical professionals and hospitals in the U.S. and maintain close collaboration with such throughout the care of a child. These are families that open their homes to children needing surgery and serve many important roles during the child’s stay in the U.S. They take responsibility for the child’s basic needs as well as transportation and lodging for the child throughout their treatment period. Compassion Medicine carefully screens such host families and extensive background and child abuse checks are required. If you would like to learn more about our requirements or have interest in being evaluated to serve as a host family, please Compassion Medicine partners with other organizations that have a special interest in helping children. Examples may be other non-profit organizations that support children or provide translators, lodging, or transportation. Compassion Medicine values the prayers and financial support that provides the foundation needed to do what we do. We are committed to operating with full transparency, accountability, and integrity as we seek God’s guidance with the care of each child. Missionary to the Philippines In December of 2013, I was looking for someone who could help Jherty Anne, a 9 year old child here in the Philippines, who needed surgery for her right hand deformity due to an accidental chemical burn when she was 19 days old. We know about Compassion Medicine from Dennis Moss, a friend, who informed me that they could help us with the surgery. From that point, we started communicating with Dr. Dean Jones, the founder of Compassion Medicine. We worked with Compassion medicine to arrange for her surgery and brought Jherty Anne to Manila because there was no specialist surgeon and Heart Center here where we live. Jherty Anne Baluyot’s family is very poor. They earn only $94/month which barely can buy food for the family. On May 8, 2014 she underwent surgery with the help of Compassion Medicine. They paid the cost of surgery, food, hotel to stay in Manila and airfare for Jherty Anne and her parents. The surgery was successful! The next child that Compassion Medicine helped us with was Jenny Vellera who is 4 years old. She was diagnosed with Congenital Heart disease (Tetralogy of Fallot) when she was 3 months old. Her parents work as sugarcane laborers .Even they combined income could barely pay for medicine. She underwent surgery on May 4, 2014 to close the hole of her heart .The surgery was successful with the help of Compassion Medicine. After the operation, Compassion Medicine also gave them follow-up care and medicine.
