In 1974, while involved in a family run home improvement business, Jim Schiller encountered a client who wanted to take advantage of federal tax credits for solar investments by adding a solarium to the side of his house. The problem? At that time, custom manufactured units for solariums were not mainstream. None of the client’s dimensions worked with the available kits. Schiller found a company who would build the solarium to the required specifications, which he then installed, and a solarium business was soon after born. Five years later, Schiller bought a glass company and transitioned into residential and commercial skylights and other glass endeavors. As the business grew over the next three decades, Schiller’s experience and expertise with glass installation grew exponentially. He learned that commercial glass installation projects involve more than just proper installation. One of the keys he mastered early was managing the interaction between all the different players: the client, the contractor, the manufacturer, the code officials, and ever the other trades on the job sites with whom he had to interact.. He continually took on the role of go-between and expanded his involvement in project timelines to include all points from inception to completed installation. With his wife, Sue, as CEO and company owner (giving CSSofFL minority-owned status), Commercial Skylight Systems of Florida, Inc. ( CSSofFL ) began taking on large commercial projects that included everything from airports, hotels, to schools and everything in between. Three journeyman glaziers, located throughout the country, were brought on board to ensure that the installation of every project was held to the highest standards. In 2016, Mr. Schiller though he was again ready to retire, and CSSofFL had amassed an impressive portfolio of work and established a superior reputation among suppliers and clients in the commercial skylight segment. Each of its projects stood as a testament to the Company’s focus on quality workmanship and customer service. So he and his wife sold the company assets and he went fishing. That didn’t last long. With three journeyman glaziers on staff, there is always an experienced professional on-site during project work. Their job is to adhere to the highest standards of workmanship, safety and professionalism to insure the production of a superior end product. Our 40+ years glass industry experience has provided us with the skills needed to not only complete each project, but also manage the process. More than just installers, we act as a liaison between the client, the contractor, the manufacturer and code officials. Our talents can be utilized at any point in the construction process. We can help owners or general contractors from the point of project conception with budget forecasting, design assistance and computer modeling. We can also act as an owner’s representative with the manufacturer, the general contractor and other glazing contractors. In many cases, we play a combination of those individual roles by both furnishing and installing the final product.
