MISSION & PHILOSOPHY Mission and Philosophy My mission is to work with each individual student and family in the most appropriate style and setting in order to facilitate procedures that might otherwise be arduous and stressful. My goal is to help each student complete applications and essays that will showcase his or her academic and personal achievements and interests. Using a variety of methods and resources, including those available on my website, I work with each student as often and in whatever communication format suits his/her needs, as indicated by the accompanying list of available packages and services I provide. I have found that developing trust, rapport and understanding in a calm and objective working environment are the keys to a successful application experience. Over the past few decades, I have worked with applicants to college as well as to graduate school, business school, law school, and medical school. I have also helped applicants to summer programs, internships, and career opportunities. I have edited manuscripts for college papers, Masters theses, Ph.D. dissertations and professional screenplays. In the 1980s, I developed a college application and essay curriculum for high school seniors. As I learned more about the college application process, I realized that there was a need not only to counsel students in good writing but to help them view their own backgrounds, strengths, and personal stories as worth telling. By 2007, upon retiring from teaching, I became the “College Essay Whiz,” providing clients with advice about applying to college and post-graduate programs, writing personal statements and supplements, creating resumes and cover letters, and practicing for interviews. As computers replaced the old writing implements, I learned a great deal about communicating with my clients through email and Skype. My clients have ranged from Curacao to California and from high school seniors to senior citizens applying to programs! I applied to Williams, Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Haverford (all four of which are top-ten liberal arts colleges), and was admitted to all four.
